Trivia / Steven Wilson

  • Attention Deficit Creator Disorder: HOLY CRAP. The guy had around eight projects, which only him working on four projects as of late (that is, his solo work, Blackfield, Bass Communion and No-Man), and that's not even going with working on remastering albums and such. Wilson is a very productive man.
  • Limited Special Collector's Ultimate Edition:
    • And how. With each solo release, Wilson has put out a special edition hardbound book featuring exclusive photos or illustrations along with CD and blu-ray editions of the album, with demos and 5.1 mixes thrown in for good measure. The SE release for Hand. Cannot. Erase., however, cranks this up to eleven by including frighteningly realistic pull-out pieces and documents that represent the life of the album's protagonist. Suffice to say, these also end up suffering Keep Circulating the Tapes, as it's hard to find any special editions that aren't over $200-600.
    • Wilson's policy of releasing deluxe editions reached its peak in November of 2020, when he announced an ultra-deluxe edition of The Future Bites, which was given the name of "ULTRA DELUXE MUSIC PRODUCT ON OBSOLETE MEDIA". It was limited to a single box set and contained — in addition to the contents of the standard deluxe box set — a test pressing of the album, test pressings of the "Eminent Sleaze" and "12 Things I Forgot" singles, a CD featuring a cover performed during a soundcheck (which has otherwise never been performed live), a 7-inch single containing a track entitled "The Tastemaker" (which will never be released anywhere else), the laptop bag and print materials from the "Eminent Sleaze" video, Polaroids taken during the album's cover shoot, an original drawing of Wilson by Hajo Mueller, laminated AAA passes from tours between 2011 and 2018, his Grammy nominee's certificate and medal for Grace for Drowning, and finally, the original lyric sheets for eight tracks written between 1996 and 2020 (complete with annotations and corrections). It sold for £10,000, all of which went to the Music Venues Trust to help venues affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. An unboxing video made by the buyer can be found here, and Wilson permitted him to upload the box set's exclusive songs online for free given the exceptional rarity of its official release.
  • Production Posse: He’s acquired one over the course of his solo career. Frequent collaborators include Theo Travis, Adam Holzman, Nick Beggs, Craig Blundell and Ninet Tayeb.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Steven has cited bands such as King Crimson, XTC, and many others as influences on his music. Years later, he's not only gone on to collaborate with the likes of Robert Fripp and Steve Hackett, but to also remix their albums into 5.1 surround sound as part of the sound production end of his career.
  • Release Date Change: Wilson was forced to delay the release of The Future Bites from mid-2020 to early 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, which impeded his plans to promote the album with a variety of multimedia projects.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Some of the tracks on Unreleased Electronic Music were originally intended as the start of further musical projects.
    • "King of the Delta Blues" and "To Wear a Crown" were made as part of a collaborative project (called King of the Delta Blues) with Chris Lewis of obscure band Crashing Time, which didn't get anywhere beyond those two tracks.
    • "The Tobogganist" was intended for an electronic solo album that Wilson would have released under the name of the Tobogganist.
    • "Nailbomber" was recorded for an advert, but was rejected by the advertising agency, who likely wanted "something in the style of The Chemical Brothers".
