- Franchise Killer: This was the last console game to be made in the first continuity aside from some mobile games with every other game being released as part of the Ubisoft-made The Sands of Time continuity until its Continuity Reboot in 2008.
- Creator Backlash: Jordan Mechner disliked the project as it evolved, seeing it as little more than a clone of Tomb Raider I, which was very popular at the time. He also felt a disconnect with the Prince's character, as executive pressure had forced the Prince into becoming a character he barely recognized.
- What Could Have Been:
- The original third game was going to be a 2D side scroller continuing the story of the previous two games directed by Mechner which is foreshadowed by the witch looking at the prince in a mirrorball at the ending of Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame but due to the publisher of the previous two games Brøderbund Software being bought out by The Learning Company in 1998 the game was made as a 3D platformer with Mechner taking a less involved role as a consultant.
- There were plans for a PlayStation port but was scrapped due to the release of the PlayStation 2, Also a Nintendo 64 port was considered at one point but was scrapped as well.
