Trivia / Overdrawn at the Memory Bank

  • Accidentally-Correct Writing: The one thing the film accurately predicted was that future office workers would watch movies on their computers while they were supposed to be working.
  • Acting for Two: Raul Julia plays not only Aram Fingal, but also Fingal's Ascended Fanboy version of Rick from Casablanca in Cyberspace. The two are shown to interact on numerous occasions (in fact, at one point the timing of the Split Screen dialog doesn't quite match up, resulting in an awkward pause).
  • Doing It for the Art: New York resident Raul Julia accepted the role solely because of his love of public television, which he thought this would help promote. He was heavily involved with public television, and appeared in many WNET pledge drives and productions (he also spent four years as a regular on Sesame Street).
  • Follow the Leader: Amazingly, the film, made in 1984, is far ahead of its time. It would be another 10 plus years before the virtual reality craze began, including films like The Matrix. It was actually on the recommended films list for the Cyberpunk 2020 RPG. That's what cyberpunk cinema looked like in the eighties.
  • Franchise Killer: The third and last in a series of literary sci-fi adaptations by PBS. According to producer Robert Lantos, the film ran overbudget due to its special effects and only covered its cost due to pre-sales to American cable networks. Although it received decent reviews when initially released, the cost and difficult production persuaded PBS not to pursue any further science fiction adaptations.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The MST3K version is easy to find, but good luck finding a copy of the actual movie, which you can only find on VHS and Laserdisc.
