• Box Office Bomb: Budget, $138-146 million. Box office, $67 million. A release in the Dump Months, the COVID-19 Pandemic having bottlenecked moviegoing towards mostly big IPs, a snowstorm closing off American theaters, negative reviews and audiences either unaware or apathetic helped the film never take off. This is notably Emmerich's fifth box office bomb in a row, and easiest the biggest one yet.
• Backed by the Pentagon: NASA helped the production, specially with information regarding the Space Shuttle.
• California Doubling: Set in the United States, filmed in Montreal, not helped by the COVID-19 Pandemic not allowing for location shooting.
• Extremely Lengthy Creation: The idea emerged during Independence Day: Resurgence and the script was written across four years.
• Production Posse: Actor Patrick Wilson and director Roland Emmerich previously collaborated together on Midway.
• Similarly Named Works: There is a book also labeled Moonfall and features a calamity with the moon, the two plots are completely unrelated. In the book, the moon is hit with an asteroid so big and so fast that the moon shatters, and the rest of the book details having to deal with the aftermath.
• Swan Song: In the Japanese dub, this film was one of the last voice acting roles Motomu Kiyokawa (as Holdenfield) did before his death at August 2022.
• What Could Have Been: Josh Gad and Stanley Tucci were initially cast, but scheduling conflicts forced Gad to drop out (with John Bradley replacing him), while Tucci was replaced by Michael Peña due to complications created by the COVID-19 Pandemic preventing him from travelling to the production in Canada.
