Trivia / Letterkenny

Go To

  • Actor-Shared Background:
    • Dylan Playfair (Reilly), Andrew Herr (Jonesy) and Jared Keeso (Shoresy) did play junior hockey before becoming actors, and were all teammates on a beer league team in Vancouver.
    • Jared Keeso (Wayne) grew up in a small Ontario farm town, though he worked in his family's sawmill, not on a farm.
    • Dylan Playfair (Reilly) grew up playing junior hockey with his brothers. Additionally his uncle Jim played in the NHL for 12 years, and his dad Jim played professionally for nine years (though only a handful of games in the NHL). Jim Playfair has also been involved in coaching at the minor, and NHL levels since the mid-'90s.
    • Dan Petronijevic (McMurray) is Serbian and Scottish, same as his character.
  • Acting for Two: Jared Keeso portrays both Wayne and Shoresy. Since the latter is The Faceless, it's not as difficult as it sounds.
  • Approval of God:
    • A user on Reddit posted a picture to Instagram of them and their friends going as McMurray, Tanis, Katy, and Squirrely Dan for Halloween, and Kaniehtiio Horn personally praised the costumes.
    • Inverted when a "Blue Lives Matter" meme began circulating in the wake of the George Floyd protests that consisted of an image of Squirrely Dan and a quote that started with "Didja ever notice..." (From 4.4 "Letterkenny Talent Show"). Jared Keeso and K. Trevor Wilson both denounced the meme, with Wilson even making a lengthy Instagram post about how disgusting he found it — due to both he and Dan being entirely against what the meme espoused — and loathed having his face associated with it. He encouraged people to quit sharing the meme and actively report anyone circulating it to the moderators of the appropriate platform as a violation of intellectual property. Thankfully, as of the end of the year, his request seemed to have largely worked.
  • British Brevity: None of the seasons have more than seven episodes.
  • The Cast Showoff:
    • Squirrely Dan does a stand-up routine for the talent show. In real life K. Trevor Wilson is a best-selling, award-winning comedian.
    • Season 10 has Evan Stern (Roald) show off his impressive dance skills.
  • Cast the Runner-Up: Dan Petronjevic was the leading choice for Squirrelly Dan before K. Trevor Wilson auditioned, before he was given the role of McMurray instead.
  • Corpsing: Some of the jokes are so fast-paced, even the cast has trouble keeping it together. For example, some of Jared Keeso's chirps as Shoresy leave Andrew Herr (Jonesy), Dylan Playfair (Reilly), and Mark Forward (Coach) all noticeably struggling to contain themselves, as well as Tiio Horn (Tanis) in Season 7 (while Bradley Trudeau (Axe) and Dylan Cook (Slash) don't even bother).
    • Most notable when the hockey team finds Shoresy naked in the showers and he begins trading barbs with Jonesy and Reilly; it's fairly obvious that Mark Forward is doing his damnedest not to start cracking up at the antics between the three. Andrew Herr (Jonesy) himself can't stifle a chuckle in one of his lines.
    • When Noah Dyck shows up in season 8 to ask the guys with help on his farm, a conversation filled to the brim with dick jokes and double entendres, Jonathan Torrens is clearly struggling to avoid laughing. He's only partially successful.
  • Creator's Oddball: The series is co-produced by, out of all companies, WildBrain. Yes, the same exact WildBrain (previously DHX Media) who specializes in producing shows for children. Letterkenny contains excessive non-stop profanity, heavy drug/tobacco usage, and sexual content, none of which would even be allowed in the company's other shows.
  • Defictionalization: You's can now buy Pupper's Beer in Ontario. Rest of yous, figures it oot.
  • Dyeing for Your Art: Tyler Johnston, who plays Stewart, was asked to put on ten pounds of muscle mass in between seasons seven and eight (about six months), which he did with the aid of a personal trainer and eating six meals a day.
  • Fake American: Canadian Tyler Hynes portrays the American Dierks.
  • Irony as She Is Cast: Hard Right Jay, a white nationalist and definitely not a neo-Nazi, is played by Jay Baruchel, who has Jewish lineage.
  • Playing Against Type:
    • Jonathan Torrens spent so many years being white rapper J-roc on Trailer Park Boys that it's quite a turnaround indeed for him to show up as a God-fearing Mennonite in season 6 (even if his name is a dick joke).
    • Jay Baruchel is known for playing nice, average guys, so it's a bit of a shock when he turns up as Hard Right Jay, a cowardly white nationalist
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor:
    • Jacob Tierney, who's openly queer, plays the Transparent Closet Pastor Glen.
    • James Daly has stated his own sexual fluidity and plays the bisexual Ronzy.
  • Write What You Know: The series is rooted in Jared Keeso's experiences growing up in small-town Ontario, which included his time on a junior-league hockey team (which is reflected in the extensive and accurate use of hockey slang), and both Dylan Playfair (who is the son of current Edmonton Oilers assistant coach and former NHL player Jim Playfair) and Andrew Herr also played junior hockey.
  • Written by Cast Member: The vast majority of episodes are written by Jared Keeso (Wayne) and Jacob Tierney (Glen), while Jonathan Torrens (Noah Dyck) started writing at least one episode per season from Season 3 onward.
