Trivia / Heroic Times

  • Better Export for You: The film has a high quality America Blu-ray set, released in 2023 to coincide with its remaster. In its home country of Hungary, it is only available on a lower quality DVD from 2013. There is also an official online release that is only made public on very rare occasions — hence, most people know the movie via piracy.
  • Box Office Bomb: As it happened after the failures of Son of the White Horse, Time Masters and especially Foam Bath, Pannonia Film Studio had to strengthen its grip on their creative teams even further and force them to produce more profitable films.
  • Creator's Oddball: By all accounts, director József Gémes was an unassuming studio worker, more interested in the technicalities of animation than its artistry. To tackle such a mighty artistic film project was either the next step of his career, or an over-ambitious outlier. Many consider this his magnum opus precisely because it's so unique, but since other productions he's worked on (Cat City, The Seventh Brother, The Princess and the Goblin, Hugo the Hippo and Mézga család to name a few) are more famous and conventional, most don't even associate it with his name.
  • Development Gag: "Daliás idők" was the Working Title of the third Toldi poem.
  • Executive Meddling: The director wanted to tell the story purely through visuals and music, but the higher-ups forced him to add a narration track over the whole thing. Despite the dramatic writing and the talents of Gyula Szabó, it was thought the narration took away from the film's impact and lacked the poetic merit of the source material.
