Trivia / Helstrom

Go To

  • Ability over Appearance: Tom Austen looks nothing like Damien Hellstrom in the comics. The producers couldn't find a good-enough red-haired actor with the bodybuilder build.
  • California Doubling: The show was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, but is set in the States.
  • Contractual Obligation Project: The series was commisioned by Marvel Television for Hulu as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a supernatural horror subfranchise titled Adventure Into Fear, with a standalone Ghost Rider series (with Gabriel Luna reprising his role) also being developed and many other horror characters also having planned adaptations. However, following a corporate restructuring that had MCU Producer Kevin Feige gaining complete oversight over the Television side of the MCU, the subfranchise was aborted with all the shows cancelled except Helstrom due to being too far in development, and was allowed to finish production but also declared non-canonical to the MCU in order to fulfil their contractual obligations to the parties involved.
  • Divorced Installment: Originally planned to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the changing of the guard at Marvel Television caused this series to instead be a completely standalone Marvel Comics adaptation with no official connections to the MCU. The continuity that the series is set in was unofficially dubbed Earth-TRN836, rather than the MCU's Earth-199999. There's been some Flip-Flop of God, and the series is still covered on the Marvel Cinematic Universe wiki, however.
  • Fake American: English actor Tom Austen as Daimon Helstrom.
  • Invisible Advertising: The show was very badly advertised in general, with very little in the way of press junkets as well. This is presumably due its status as a Contractual Obligation Project as detailed above.
  • Screwed by the Network: Not by Hulu, but unintentionally by Marvel Television, which was restructured into a subdivision of Marvel Studios during Helstrom's pre-production phase. As a result of this and a vast change in plans regarding the future of Marvel TV shows (which will now all be supervised by Kevin Feige and release on Disney+), the show will not continue after the first season. The series does not even have the Marvel logo during the credits.
  • Stillborn Franchise: As detailed below, Helstrom was to be the first of a forthcoming Adventure Into Fear superhero horror franchise with the proposed Ghost Rider series being the only other project that was properly announced.
  • What Could Have Been: As mentioned above and on the main page, Helstrom was supposed to open the door to a series of horror-themed Marvel shows on Hulu that would have shared an Adventure into Fear label. The only other known show set in this planned Adventure into Fear line was supposed to a Ghost Rider series with Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes, but there would have been more. That fell through and after Disney absorbed Marvel Television into Marvel Studios, the only show that was left was Helstrom.
