Trivia / Doctor Who S20 E3 "Mawdryn Undead"

Go To

  • Dawson Casting: The actors cast as schoolboys look a little on the old side (although in Turlough's case this is intentionally the case).
  • Dyeing for Your Art: Mark Strickson dyed his naturally blond hair ginger for the role of Turlough, at the behest of producer John Nathan-Turner, who felt that he resembled Peter Davison too closely with his natural hair colour.
  • First Appearance: Of Turlough.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The Brigadier's role in the story was originally meant for Ian Chesterton (his first appearance since leaving in 1965), but William Russell was unavailable. Former companion Harry Sullivan was also considered, but Ian Marter was also unavailable.
    • Turlough was supposed to be introduced in The Song of the Space Whale, a never-filmed story which had been suggested a year earlier. In that version, Turlough was a space colonist. Eric Saward however disliked the direction the story took and his relationship with the writer, so Mawdryn took it’s place.
  • Write What You Know: Peter Grimwade based the public school setting on his own upbringing. He was an alumnus of Truro School, an all-boys private establishment in Cornwall and he "knew the background of a dreadful minor public school very well".
  • You Look Familiar:
    • David Collings (Mawdryn) also appeared as Vorus and Poul.
    • Angus MacKay previously played Borusa.
