Box Office Bomb: With only $26,250,020 made of its $37 million budget, the movie's failure left an odd stain on Cameron Crowe's career, and was part of an unsatisfactory year for distributor Sony. The whitewashing accusations caused by the casting of Emma Stone as the one-quarter Chinese and one-quarter Hawaiian Allison Ng (see below) didn't help - because of all this, she now views this role as an Old Shame.
Direct-to-Video: The British and French theatrical releases got cancelled, with the movie going straight to DVD and VOD.
Old Shame: Cameron Crowe apologised for casting Emma Stone in the lead and reinforcing the whitewashing controversy in Hollywood. Stone herself expressed regret for taking the role, and when Sandra Oh brought it up at the 2019 Golden Globes, Stone (who was up for a Globe that year for her role in The Favourite) audibly apologised from the crowd.
