Tear Jerker / Regular Show: The Movie

Go To

  • Rigby being forced to read his Brutally Honest college rejection letter. The paper even freakin' insults him. Many of his friends, bar Mordecai, were visibly wincing, but Benson is the one most saddened.
    • If anything, Benson wincing is one of the most poignant reactions aside from Mordecai himself. Benson's a man who isn't afraid to call Rigby a screw-up, lazy or a slacker and those adjectives do hold merit, yet Rigby's screwed up in the most painful way imaginable, more so than any of the previous park jobs he's done at that point, but instead of verbally ripping into Rigby, he winces. You know it's bad if even the boss who isn't afraid to be frank about how lazy Rigby can be doesn't even do that.
  • Just look and listen as Rigby is re-reading his rejection letter — compared to his tear-filled face the first time he read it, his current expression looks completely numb and straight-faced as he audibly struggles to compose himself. He has long gotten used to the sting of this letter imprinted in his mind, and the selfish, deplorable actions that came after it, that he's resigned himself to the fact that he'll always be (seen as) a failure and a loser for the rest of his life.
  • After finding out about the fake rejection letter, Mordecai decides to break his friendship with Rigby, all set to "Pale Blue Eyes".
Mordecai: I can't believe you, Rigby. All this time you were lying to me?! And what? So you forged my rejection letter? Is that it?
    Rigby: Yeah, but-
Mordecai: UGH! Why would you do that?!
Mordecai: You don't get it, do you?!
Mordecai: It's always just one thing with you! You don't do that to your best friend! Ugh! You're... (grunts) You're the reason I'm stuck in this DEAD-END JOB!!
Rigby: Well, I'm stuck too! Who better to be stuck with than your friend?
    (Rigby runs off in tears)
    • This completely shatters Rigby, as he drives off in the ship, and plans to DRIVE INTO THE SUN.
    • The reactions of the other Mordecais further sell it. Past Mordecai feels sorry for Past Rigby since he hasn't gone through what's currently happening and thus understands that Rigby doesn't want to be left alone while Future Mordecai laments how things have ended with his own Rigby, regretting how he didn't understand how Rigby felt getting rejected until now and by then, it was too late to make amends since Future Rigby died.
  • Suffering grave damage after Taking the Bullet to save his present self from Mr. Ross, Future Mordecai mournfully expresses how his Start of Darkness caused by Rigby's lie and aligning himself with Ross to get revenge gave him the financially-successful future they've always wanted, but cost him everyone they were ever close with. His final words were how he would trade it all just to hang out with Rigby one last time, all while telling his present self to fix the future, and afterwards, dies from his wounds.
Future Mordecai: It was all a waste, Mordecai. I sold us out. I climbed the evil corporate ladder. I had an evil six-figure salary, and even bought an evil condo in Maui — right on the beach. (groans) And for what? No family, no friends. Work isn't everything. It's not worth shooting your best friend over, I'll tell you that. Truth is… (groans) Right now, I'd trade in my life for an afternoon playing video games with my bro. (coughs, hands his present self the keys to his ship, smiles somberly) The future is in your hands….. (coughs, groans weakly, and dies in front of him)
  • While he's a purely evil Omnicidal Maniac and proud of it, it's still somewhat sad how Ross' life went to absolute hell thanks to Rigby. He went so far as building a time machine to get payback, went to prison over an accident Mordecai and Rigby caused, and years later has become a murderous warlord driven by his hatred of one student. To top it off, he comes to a truly horrible fate when said student defeats him, lost in the timestream in an infinite loop of death. Even when Rigby undoes the Bad Future, Ross still goes to prison for the machine's explosion, meaning his life isn't going to be much better after finally forgiving his nemesis.
