Tear Jerker / Mister Miracle (2017)

Go To

  • Issue #4 consists of a sham trial that mostly consists of Orion prodding Scott over his beliefs and morals based on everything that's happened, including his lingering traumas and sense of resentment — even to Highfather, who he felt abandoned him before he could even be given a "real" name — that have finally started to catch up to him. Even though it's ostensibly framed as a means to determine if he's been corrupted by the supernatural Anti-Life Equation, the matters on hand are very clearly real and visibly tear Scott apart. It's no wonder why he lashes out as violently as he does.
Orion: You hate our father. True or false?
    Scott: True. Fine.
Orion: You hate me. True or false?
    Scott: True.
Orion: You hate New Genesis. True or false?
    Scott: True.
Orion: You hate Apokolips. True or false?
    Scott: True.
Orion: You hate your career. True or false?
    Scott: True.
Orion: You hate your childhood. True or false?
    Scott: True.
Orion: You hate your life. True or false?
    Scott: True.
Orion: You hate yourself. True or false?
    Scott: True.
Orion: You hate God. True or false?
    Scott: True.
Orion: Hate made you doubt everything. True or false?
    Scott: True.
Orion: Hate drove you to escape everything. True or false?
    Scott: True.
Orion: Hate made you kill yourself. True or false?
    Scott: True.
  • After six issues of Scott denying Orion as his brother, he starts screaming in horror and shooting out a Rapid-Fire "No!" upon finding his bloodied body, even cradling it.
    • Even at the end, we see that Scott continues to deny the kinship he had with Orion.
  • The variant cover of issue #10 features Scott in his Mister Miracle costume, standing among a birthday party for Jacob, wearing a Batman party mask... and covering his face as he's very clearly bawling his eyes out, since he knows that once it's over, he's going to have to surrender Jacob over to Darkseid.
  • In Issue #10, while arguing over whether to hand baby Jacob over to Darkseid to end the war, Barda finally confronts Scott over his suicide attempt in the first issue, making it clear how much it affected her since it first happened. It’s a legitimately heartbreaking moment.
Barda: I had to scrape you off the floor. Cry with strangers in an E.R. I made %$#@ life work, while you were too... whatever you were to do anything! When do I get to escape, Scott?!
