Atticus

A Half-Orc Cleric/Paladin of Nike who once served as a knight in minor conflicts at the border before being recalled home to keep order. Has failed to see what order there is to be kept.

  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Has been recalled to the capital from serving as a tactical commander of knights in the field and given a captainship answering only to one of the capital's leading judge magisters. The time delivering orders from behind a map has made him no less of a capable warrior in the heat of battle, however.
  • By-the-Book Cop: Keeps to the tenets of the law as best he can.
  • The Charmer: Tends to have a warm, welcoming way with people that puts them at ease despite the fact that some might see his position or Half-Orc nature as intimidating. Alternatively, with his superiors, he tends to have rather disarming tendencies, easily earning their trust.
  • Church Militant: What he essentially is and is seen as, though nobler than the typical connotation of this trope.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has a quip seemingly prepared in a litany of different situations, likely from spending years among soldiers who would often pass the time with witty banter.
  • Dork Knight: One who hears of the well-respected captain - a Half-Orc, no less - who directed troops in the field might imagine a completely stringent, stone-faced military tactician. However, Atticus is a snarky and typically relaxed, if dutiful, individual who would struggle to come across as strictly intimidating.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: What he has faced a few times in the past as he has worked his way through the ranks, but he has proven reliable and noble enough that he could not be held back. This has all but ceased lately, and he didn't know why until he got back home and found out that the people had apparently decided that there were much more monstrous individuals to discriminate against.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: What he is as a Half-Orc. Actually won the lottery to look more like his human side, but up close, it's obvious even with his shorter tusks and more pinkish-yellow skin.
  • Heroic Build: As a Half-Orc, Atticus is tall and broad-shouldered, easily standing out even among soldiers and officers.
  • Noble Top Enforcer: Though some would question his character strictly because he is a Half-Orc, those in the know understand that Atticus is deserving of respect for his capabilities and, perhaps more importantly, for his reliability and decency.

Aelin

A Yuan-Ti Pureblood and dancing Bard reared in a commune splintered from the rest of her race, focused on survival and better relations with other peoples. Persecuted for her nature since the loss of her home and driven her to live in the cities.

  • Action Girl: An otherworldly beauty, as a Yuan-Ti Pureblood who seemingly managed to grow into the best of both her human and serpent sides, while also being an acrobat, dancer, and skillful magic-user who often uses her gifts to support her people and others who are oppressed against the city's more prejudiced forces.
  • Anti-Hero: Despite prejudiced folk referring to her as a sneak, a robber, and a lowlife who would eat children if she could get away with it, Aelin is nonetheless interested in only two things - raising money for herself and those she wants to aid and protecting them from people who would take advantage of them. Of course, she does tend to engage in sneaky, shady acts to ensure success, but not to the point of actually harming anyone - not permanently anyway.
  • Brainy Brunette: Has black hair streaked with purple highlights from her Yuan-Ti nature and proves incredibly witty and clever, to the point of surviving in a city where many would as soon run her though as tolerate her presence.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Is certainly not above tricks, deception, use of her wiles, and blows directed at very specific places when threatened.
  • Dude Magnet: She may be a Yuan-Ti Pureblood and thus looked upon warily by even the most tolerant of people, but there is no denying that she can draw attention from any man in the city for her looks and charisma. Uses this to her advantage, with obvious limits.
  • Good Bad Girl: A heroic woman who wants to do the best by her people and those who are oppressed but who is willing to use illegal means, tricks, and innuendos to accomplish her goals.
  • Hot Gypsy Woman: And how. Of course, not a gypsy, but her world's equivalent, especially considering she dances in the streets and at festivities for coin. And, of course, she is exceedingly fit and beautiful.
  • Magic Music: On a much smaller scale than many Bards since her dance is the key to her performances, but she does tend to use a tambourine when she dances.
  • Nice Girl: The antithesis to the Yuan-Ti Pureblood who tend to live on the outskirts of the civilized world, completing living rituals and eating more pink-skinned races. Aelin has a fantastic heart for downtrodden people and for community and hardly ever thinks of harming anyone and least of all, of eating them - she even tries to act decently to people who might hate her, to a point.
  • Snake People: She is one, a part of a race born from ancient humans who got into too close of a relationship with a snake goddess who believed humans, elves, and the like are just meat like any other animal. However, the particular sect of her race to which she belongs is far removed from this somewhat horrifying origin and try to live as common folk - not that easy given the reputation.
  • Snakes Are Sexy: A lot of common folks' obsession with the Yuan-Ti has to do with the fact that Snakes Are Sinister and some of the wild ones eat people... but there is also a not-so-subtle underlying obsession in this way as well, especially when it comes to Aelin herself, who is exceptionally saucy.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: The reputation of Yuan-Ti Purebloods - even the more human-like ones - thanks to their more barbarous societies on the edge of the civilized world is that they are at their best deceitful, at the worst looking for any chance to steal and eat the babies of the common races. Aelin and her civilized kin who have overcome these more primal urges are left to suffer for this reason.
  • Stage Magician: Part of her dancing act is the use of magic - Bardic magic - to enhance her appearance, to add to the flash of her moves, and to pull the attention of the crowds.
