Recap / What We Do in the Shadows S3E6 "The Escape"

Go To

Nandor and Nadja discover that the Sire, the oldest living vampire from whom all vampires are descended, has escaped his cell at the Vampiric Council headquarters. Fearing the consequences, everyone must now work to recapture him.

Tropes:

  • The Bait: Guillermo reluctantly allows himself to be bait for the trap set for The Sire. It fails when the vampires pull him away too early.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Lazlo and Colin Robinson discuss the fact how Lazlo and Nadja should no longer exist if it was true that a vampires death means the death of every vampire he created, since Nadja was sired by The Baron. This leads them to realize the Baron is perhaps not as dead as they thought.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: When Nandor laments that the Sire escaping is all his fault, Guillermo slaps him in the face and tells him to stop feeling sorry for himself, since the more important thing is to recapture the Sire before he wreaks more havoc.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: After the Baron speaks to the Sire, it's revealed that all the Sire wants is to be free, having grown tired of being locked up by the Vampiric Council.
  • iSophagus: In his struggle with The Sire, Lazlo accidentally swallows his harmonica. From there on, whenever he speaks, it's accompanied by harmonica music.
  • Improvised Armour: Nandor attempts this with whatever he finds at the store where The Sire is hiding. He ends up wearing, among other things, an inflatable flamingo tube and a bicycle helmet (which Nadja has him take off since it won't help).
  • It's All My Fault: Nandor fully takes the blame for The Sire's escape since it was his task to feed him, never mind that Nadja forgot to actually inform him about this fact.
  • Lost Language: None of the vampires realize The Sire can speak, since he talks in the ancient tongue of the vampires that none of them know and is implied to have been lost to all but the most ancient vampires. Only the Baron speaks it as well, and is thus able to talk The Sire into standing down.
  • Not Quite Dead: It's revealed that the Baron is still alive, albeit missing most of his body and just barely clinging to life for the past two years while buried underground. He's surprisingly chill about it, all things considered.
  • No Ontological Inertia: The reason the vampires are afraid the Sire might get hurt is because if a vampire dies, all other vampires he/she created die as well. And since the sire is the first vampire, his death would mean the end of all vampires worldwide.
  • Our Gargoyles Rock: The Guide is familiar with at least two Gargoyles in Staten Island, whom she consults if she needs intel. They sit on top of a tall sky scraper, can communicate with other gargoyles throughout New York through emitting loud sound that (as Nadja lampshades) sounds like a truck horn, and are quite the Gossipy Hens. They never move from their spot during the scene, but it's unclear if they are stuck in place or simply didn't see the need to move.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Nadja intended for Nandor to be put in charge of feeding The Sire, but forgot to tell him.
  • Tunnel King: The Sire escaped his cell by tunneling his way out.
  • Undead Abomination: The Sire had "devolved" into a monster so terrifying that one of the Vampire Council's chief duties is to keep him contained.
  • You, Get Me Coffee: When Guillermo takes charge of the hunt and starts giving the vampires tasks, he orders Colin Robinson to get him a glass of water without ice.
