  • Date First Aired: 29/09/1992

After some havoc with a chimpanzee, Bill returns home with a can of paint to find that Ben has found some magic-related stuff in the attic. Whilst she gives the house a makeover, Tina comes with news that Ben's father is coming over, news which Ben isn't appreciative of as he largely ignored him when he was younger.

Soon, he arrives and as expected, relations are tense, especially when he shows up with his new wife, Darrani. Making matters worse is when Bill finally learns that Angelo is dead via a newspaper Ben used for the painting. However, Darrani admits that she is fairly happy and that Frank is a good man. Regardless, Bill and Rona take her out to a stripper's club, where Rona recognizes one of them as being her old fiancee Gordon. Meanwhile, Ben and Frank make up, with Frank admitting his flaws.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Tina starts calling Darrani "Boat" after being told that that is what it translates to in English.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Frank treats his wife like a slave and calls her an "it", causing even more tension between him and his son. Darrani doesn't seem too bothered with it, seeing as she has a home and a husband.
  • Beast in the Building: A Chimpanzee owned by the RSPCA manages to get free and cause mischief for Bill from within the supermarket.
  • Brief Accent Imitation:
    • Ben adopts the accent of Tommy Cooper when he finds some stuff in the attic.
    • Both Bill and Ben adopt posh accents when Jenny complains about the makeover that Bill is giving the house.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Dramatic Thunder: The sound of thunder plays when Bill finds out that Angelo is dead.
  • Foreshadowing: Bill asks about Gordon, Rona's former fiancee, early on in the episode. The episode's final moments have him show up at the Apollo Men.
  • Fun with Subtitles: What Ben and his father first see each other, a set of subtitles pop up which do not match what they say, instead reflecting their actual feelings with each other. For instance, what Ben says as "Okay?" becomes "Yes, no thanks to you" in the subtitles.
  • Hates Their Parent: Ben is quite cold to his father thanks to his aloofness during his formative years and he outright claims that he doesn't have a father. He does ease up a bit later on, however.
  • "Help! Help! Trapped in Title Factory!": A passenger finds under their Chicken Kiev and coleslaw a note reading "Help! I am being held prisoner in an airline meals factory. My only hope is to make a pistol out of Edam. Please do not eat your tomato as I need it for ammunition". It's never stated outright, but it was apparently Bill's doing.
  • Internal Reveal: Although Angelo's death has been known to both the audience and Ben since "I'm Going Slightly Mad", it is only this episode that Bill finally finds out via newspaper.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: Bill and Ben are horrified when Frank calls Darrani "it".
Frank: It looks good, it works hard, and it knows its place.
    Bill: It?
Frank: It's just a figure of speech, princess.
Bill: What, like "total prat" you mean?
Ben: What she means is, this crap may go down well with your ex-pat cronies, but it's not exactly human rights.
  • Mighty Whitey and Mellow Yellow: Frank married Darrani because he has a stereotypical view of Thai women and assumed she'd be an excellent homemaker. Darrani thinks he's a good husband, but admits to Bill that she initially married him because her family is very poor.
  • Silly Simian: A Chimpanzee runs loose in the supermarket and causes mischief for Bill, including running off with her shopping trolley.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: Ben's father was never home when he was still around.
