Recap / Transformers: Animated, S2E12: A Bridge Too Close — Part I

Go To

The Decepticons finally put their plan into action, kidnapping Bulkhead to aid in Megatron's plan to take over Cybertron.

Tropes:

  • Continuity Nod: The Headmaster Unit is still in Sumdac Tower, and it's going to cause more trouble for our heroes from then on out. But for now, Megatron uses the Headmaster Unit to threaten Bulkhead into building his space bridge.
  • Defiant Captive: Bulkhead refuses to help Megatron several times, not even caring when Megatron threatens decapitation. He only agrees when Megatron threatens the other Autobots and Professor Sumdac.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The Starscream clones all get these when they make their first appearance. Skywarp panics at the idea of facing Megatron, Thundercracker brags about his intellect, Sunstorm licks the boots of Thundercracker and Starscream, and Ramjet lies about being the original Starscream, and when confronted for lying he claims he never lied in the first place. And when Starscream asks what part of himself Slipstream represents, she sarcastically tells him he doesn't want to know.
  • Evil Costume Switch: More like Evil Color Switch. Upon getting branded as Decepticons, Mixmaster and Scrapper's color scheme goes from yellow and gray to green and purple. Their personalities don't really change, however.
  • Hidden Depths: The Autobots learn that Bulkhead is the best Space Bridge expert in all of Cybertron. They don't even believe Blurr at first when he tells them.
  • Initiation Ceremony: In this episode, we discover that becoming a Decepticon apparently involves getting your body branded with their insignia. It seems very painful, as Mixmaster and Scrapper scream in agony as they are branded.
  • Internal Reveal: Sari and the Autobots finally learn that Professor Sumdac is being held captive by the Decepticons.
  • Motor Mouth: Blurr introduces himself to Bumblebee by delivering a speech so fast Bumblebee can barely keep up with him.
Bumblebee: Uh, could you repeat that last part?
    Blurr: Which last part?
Bumblebee: Oh, everything after "The name's not Zippy".
  • Multi-Part Episode: The first half of "A Bridge Too Close".
  • Mythology Gag: Mixmaster and Scrapper's new colors are taken from their G1 versions.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Megatron threatens to use the Headmaster Unit to control Bulkhead into killing his friends if he does not comply with his desires.
  • Potty Failure: "I think I just sprang an oil leak."
  • To Be Continued: After Starscream finally shows himself at Megatron's hideout, the episode ends with one of these before things get really ugly.
  • You Do Not Want To Know: Slipstream refuses to tell Starscream which aspect of him she represents.

Starscream's Clones

Each of Starscream's clones represents one of Starscream's personality traits: Skywarp representing cowardice, Thundercracker representing egotism, Sunstorm representing butt-kissing, Ramjet representing dishonesty, and Slipstream… who prefers not to say where she came from.

How well does it match the trope?
