Chapter 39: Dinner and a Show

The girls, the Plantars, and Grime have dinner. And the girls put on a show.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Adaptation Expansion: "No Big Deal" is given additional lyrics to include Marcy, Sasha, and Luz's experiences in Amphibia.
  • Adapted Out: Once Sprig leaves the dinner party, the rest of the night's events occur offscreen. And since Sasha doesn't leave the band, Toadie's role is ultimately cut.
  • Agony of the Feet: Hitting the peak of her frustration, Luz kicks the ground forgetting she's currently barefoot and hurts herself on a rock in the ground.
  • Call-Back: Luz kissing Anne at the dance, the events at Toad Tower, Uodeela's fate, Anne and Sprig's conversation at the end of "Hopping Mall", and the previous chapter are mentioned.
  • Continuity Nod: Sprig also brings up the IRL shipping war over "Love Choice" in "Civil Wart".
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Because Sprig went to get Luz, he misses out on the vol-cake-no hornet battle.
    • Due to Sasha staying with the Sharps, the plotline with Toadie has been omitted.
  • History Repeats: Like in "Hopping Mall", there's a scene where two characters, one of them being Sprig, talk about their parents and one is hugged by the other while talking about them for comfort them as they both shed tears.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Even without Sprig, the vol-cake-no hornets are still defeated by the others.
    • Despite the additional lyrics, Grime still wins the Battle of the Bands.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Sprig catches on to Sasha's feelings for Anne and her jealousy towards Luz.
    • Luz reveals to Sprig that her dad passed away when she was little.
    • Sasha learns about and sees the wind glyph in action for the first time.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: As much as Luz hopes Anne'll want to date her when they return to Earth, she knows it's Anne's choice and if she chooses to date Sasha, then Luz will have to accept it.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Luz unknowingly guilts Sasha after telling her that she's giving her another chance.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Anne, Marcy, and Sasha take down the vol-cake-no hornets with Marcy using the wind glyphs to trap them in tornadoes while Sprig is with Luz in the forest.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: In-Universe, Sprig officially comes up with "Luzanne", the couple name for Luz and Anne (though they're still not a couple yet).
  • Pragmatic Adaptation: Parts of "The Dinner" and "Battle of the Bands" form the chapter's events: the former's aforementioned party is the only scene that remains while the latter has the girls practicing for the titular event and their performance in it.
  • The Reveal:
    • At some point, Anne told Luz that she, Sasha, and Marcy were in a band and they haven't performed since the end of 6th grade, which was before Luz met them.
    • The Voice wants Sasha to send Luz to another world with the Calamity Box: their world.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Luz opts to skip the dinner party since she doesn't want to be anywhere near Sasha and goes to try and get her powers working. Sprig attempts to join her, but it's subverted since Hop Pop forces him to stay.
  • Troll: During the dinner, Sprig repeatedly pushes Sasha's buttons by bringing up how much Luz hates her now.
  • Wham Episode: Sprig figures out Sasha's crushing on Anne and learns about Luz's father, Luz decides to give Sasha another chance when they get home and she has enough time to recover which guilts Sasha into trying to find a way to stop Beatrix from fighting her, and the voice in her head lets slip that it's someone from an alternate world trying to get Sasha to send Luz there.
