Film: Little Monsters (1989)

This review contains examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Parodied. In response to the scene where the parents of the kids Brian and Maurice framed yell at them, Critic says he would rather skip to see them get beaten and says "That one's getting the belt!".
  • invokedDesignated Hero: After about the halfway point, the Critic actively starts to hate Brian, to the point he's reduced to screaming "YOU'RE AWFUL!" when Brian complains he can't make friends.
  • Driven to Suicide: Averted, barely. The members of the Annoying Supernatural Fast Talking Dick Club all talking at once almost drive him to shoot himself in the mouth.
  • invokedDude, Not Funny!: The whole film pissed the Critic off, from Brian and Maurice's pranks to the framed kids' parents blasting them, to Brian's parents talking about getting a divorce.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
Glen: What are you doing, Brian? What the hell is going on here— Look at this mess! What the hell am I stepping in? Doritos? Jesus!
Critic: (as Glen) This is worse than that fucking time I caught you goddamn swearing!
  • Kafka Komedy: Critic hates this movie for being one cruel moment after another.
Critic: Little Monsters, because God hates you!
  • Montage: The Critic sings a rousing song about 80's montages during Brian's Hard-Work Montage... only to be caught off-guard when he has dinner in the middle of it, and then complaining (while still singing) that the montage doesn't actually have a proper ending.
  • No Ending: The Critic (rightfully) complains that the movie just ends without wrapping up much of anything.
  • Shout-Out: The Critic points out that Daniel Stern and Fred Savage appeared on The Wonder Years, and as such imitates the typical Narrator that appeared on the show.
  • Take That, Audience!: The Critic seemed to be implying that people are mindless sheep for Pixar:
Critic: Did you ever see Monsters, Inc.? Of course you did! Pixar is practically your cinematic guardian now! Anything they say, you have to pay attention to.
  • Tempting Fate: When Critic wonders if the parents' reactions to Brian and Maurice's pranks will be funny, he is proven so wrong.

"Over the shoulder boulder holder!"
