Recap / The New Adventures of Invader Zim, S2E11 "Tournament of Doom, Part 2"

Go To

As the Invaders' tournament gets underway, the various plots being enacted around it collide in a chaotic mess.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Purple has apparently been calling Bob "Pootchy".
  • Air-Vent Passageway: The Resisty and Team Save Earth sneak into the Convention Hall through the air vents. A Deconstructed example, as they barely fit in the cramped space and struggle to squeeze through.
  • All for Nothing: None of the plots surrounding the tournament pay off — the attempt by the Tallest for good PR goes up in smoke, the NIO fail to do any serious damage, none of the Invaders get the Dreadnut, Zim loses a chance to make himself look better, and the Resisty have to resort to their backup goal of stealing the Universe's Most Comfortable Couch instead of blowing up the Elites.
  • Assassination Attempt: Bob's plan for the NIO's attack on the tournament involves sneaking a bomb into the Tallest's box and blowing them and their inner circle up. It only fails because they find the bomb at the last minute.
  • Beyond the Impossible: When an elimination drone fires a teleportation beam at Zim, he blocks it with a rock, and to everyone's shock the beam bounces off of the rock and then ricochets off of the drone as well to ultimately hit Invader Flobee instead.
Dite: That's not how physics work!
  • Continuity Nod: When Tenn is facing disqualification for not having a SIR Unit, Tak refuses to help her, as payback for not standing up for her in the previous chapter.
  • Cultural Posturing: While Darth lacks the outright Fantastic Racism of most Irkens, he still feels his people are naturally superior to other species.
  • Cutting the Knot: The first challenge in the tournament is for the Invaders to run a U-shaped obstacle course. After confirming that the only rule is to reach the finish line first to win, Zim just hops to it from the side containing the starting line.
  • Epic Fail:
    • Spleenk attempts to shoot Darth, and completely fails to hit him despite firing multiple blasters at point-blank range.
    • Invader Slacks' attempt in the art competition ends up being a meaningless wad of clay, paint, and glitter.
  • Faking the Dead: Bob does this by turning his rival and mild lookalike Eloch into an unwilling body double, planting a bomb on him and tossing him in front of the guards who were chasing Bob. When they see Eloch explode, they assume Bob was carrying out a failed suicide attack and write him off as dead, enabling Bob to go into hiding.
  • I Can't Feel My Legs!: Shloonktapooxis cries this after the Resisty ship crashes, until Ixane points out that he's never had legs to begin with.
  • Implausible Deniability: When Mook tries to arrest Nyx for her crimes, he shows her a video that clearly shows her blowing up a snack cart. Her response is to say that it looks nothing like her.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Red and Purple determine that no Irken would willingly betray the Empire in such a bold way as the NIO did, so obviously they were tricked into it by the Resisty.
  • Kicked Upstairs: Wiyn feels this way about becoming commander of the Dreadnut and being sent to hunt the Resisty, whom she doesn't see as a threat.
  • Multipart Episode
  • Poorly Disguised Pilot: The author admits that this two-part story is intended as a starting point for a spinoff based on the Resisty, hence the Sequel Hook below.
  • Psychic Block Defense: Bob finds that by constantly repeating the phrase "happy thoughts", he can block out any passive attempts by the Consulars to read his mind.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Darth and Senior are willing to let the Resisty and the humans walk away, because they're not really a threat.
  • Sequel Hook: The chapter ends with Wiyn being sent to hunt after the Resisty.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye:
    • Ying suddenly appears next to Skoodge when he finds himself needing a SIR unit for part of the tournament.
    • Darth does this once again, this time appearing behind the Resisty and humans when they're in the break room.
  • Suggestive Collision: After the Resisty ship crashes, Dib and Viera regain consciousness to find that he's ended up lying on top of her, with their faces very close together. They're both quite embarrassed by this.
