Recap / The Interns Second New Year Special

Go To

The hospital prepares for another New Year. Bykov receives mysterious gifts in rather big box, signed by the "Father Frost". Bykov is sceptical: the only time he ever tried to wish for a gift from him (Kremlin-shaped alarm), he received the lame deer-decorated socks instead. After making sure that it isn't a bomb, he proceeds to cut it open — and finds new Segway — just what he actually wished for! Bykov is certain that it was the New Year gift from Kisegach, and very thankful to her. But when Bykov tries to thank Kisegach for "her" gift, from her negative reaction (she finds Segway too dangerous), he realises that it wasn't her after all. She plans to find the one who gifted this Segway to Bykov, suspecting Kupitman, only to learn that it's not him either. Kisegach tries to find out just who did that; She confirms that it's not Kupitman, but can't find any clues; not even Gleb is aware. She gives up, while Gleb decides to just take the credit for the gift in hope to earn some points with Bykov. Plan doesn't work (and costs Gleb ten night shifts, five for lying to Bykov as his boss, and five for lying to Bykov as his step-father), and then Bykov reveals that he just bought it himself, knowing that no one would would think about it. Despite Bykov's threats, Gleb rats him out to Kisegach, and she tries to use that same scheme to buy a mink coat. Then she reveals that they're short on money now, and Bykov must turn back his Segway; she can't turn back the coat, as it's not allowed. Until then... he can make the best use of it.

Kisegach tasks Alexei to play the Father Frost for children from Paediatric department, so they would not miss the New Year even if they would celebrate it here, in the hospital. Alexei thinks that he would be bad Father Frost, but the actual actor whom they hired just skips somewhere, and Kisegach can't even contact him, so he is their best option. Especially important is the little boy called Sasha — he is the son of important person called Valentine Alexandrovich, who may help them to obtain new tech if he is satisfied, and to satisfy him, they must satisfy Sasha. But when Alexei finishes, the original actor finally shows up (with another actress, who plays "Snegurochka", Father Frost's granddaughter), demanding "his" money: he mistook Alexei for competitor, who tries to "steal" his contract for himself. Alexei tries to explain that he did this as volunteer, after the actor ignored all calls (the actor defends himself by stating that he got many calls, and his phone's battery run out), but it quickly escalates to the point fighting — right in front of poor children. When they realises that they're ruining everything (and Kisegach threatens to call police), "Snegurochka" salvages the situation by lying that it was not a fight; those two just "hugged" each other, but then tripped and fell. When asked why there are two "Father Frosts", she states that since Father Frost is her grandpa, naturally, she has two of them. Children falls for it, and the rest of the show goes perfectly. Afterwards, the actor just angrily leaves, while actress stays with Lyosha, towards whom she feels attraction, and introduces herself as Lena. After drinking some champagne, they slowly, but steadily proceeds to the "most interesting" part (they already started undressing) — and it's just when Kisegach, Sasha and Sasha's father arrives... This predictably leads to Kisegach losing investor, but Alexei and Lena decides to "celebrate" anyway, right in on-call room.

Kupitman presents his new booze which he spent seven years preparing — Kupignac! He invites everyone to his party, and also announces auction for the ability to buy very first keg of Kupignac all for yourself. Rita and Lyuba visits Kupitman before auction, in hope that he would give them a little of his "Kupingnac", due to them being his friends (he refuses, though, stating that everything must go in accordance to the schedule). To their surprise, he is still completely sober — "you must take an epochal decision on clear mind and sober memory". Kupitman is currently concerned with choosing one of the two versions of the sticker he would put on "Kupignac" — this is very crucial day, and everything, whatever small, must go perfectly; to his annoyance, Rita and Lyuba can't agree which one to take, making asking them useless. He finally gives up and opens the keg, to taste a little "Kupignac" himself... and it turns out to be so utterly disgusting in both taste and smell that Kupitman actually throws up after that. Since he can't just cancel the auction, Kupitman sacrificed his entire collection of cognac to fill the keg with something at least remotely tolerable. He proceeds with the "auction", but people are reluctant to offer even remotely big sums: first one to offer anything offers merely 200 roubles, which Valya then drops to 100 roubles. In the end, the auction collects less than 5K, which would barely cover for a small banquet for three people, let alone for new collection, but Lyuba wouldn't allow such "little problem" to ruin the fun! Ultimatley, she manages to cheer him up.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Bykov secretly bought that Segway for himself and pretended that it was a sudden gift, to hide the fact that he just bought what he wanted without thinking about anyone. Gleb rats him out to Kisegach, who buys a new mink coat for herself (so she may mock Bykov with it, using his own excuse of "sudden gift" against him) and Egypt vacancy for Gleb. This, in turn, results in them losing all the money (literally all), so in order to earn something to survive until next salary, they must turn back Bykov's Segway (they can't turn back the coat, it's against the rules).
  • Jerkass: The actor whom Kisegach hired to play Father Frost for poor children is more concerned with the loss of profit (due to him showing up late, without warning anyone) than by the fact that his conflict with Lyosha almost ruined the whole holiday for the children. When Kisegach tries to recruit him into making a new show for them to make up for botched first one, he tries to leave anyway (never admitting his fault in all this), and gets only stopped by Kisegach, who points out that she may just call police over him beating up Alexei and trying to extort money from him (actor mistook him for "competitor", and completely ignored his attempts to state that he is a volunteer). Even after he and Alexei barely manages to fix situation by working together, he rather rudely replies to Alexei's suggestion to try something like this again some time, once again being more concerned with the loss of profit than that he just made sick children's life a bit happier.
  • New Year Has Come: It's the second special New Year episode, and two out of three plotlines are directly related to it: one plot is about Bykov receiving "anonymous" present, and another is about Alexei playing the Father Frost for sick children. The only oddball is Kupitman's plot about "Kupignac", but even it ends in a makeshift New Year celebration.
  • No Name Given: While we learn that Snegurochka's actress is called Lena, Father Frost's actor's name remains unknown.
  • Out of Focus: Sophia is absent from the episode.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The actor whom Kisegach hired to play Father Frost arrives late, but failed to warn her because his phone's battery run out. Kisegach tasks Alexei to play the Father Frost instead. When guy finally shows up, he mistakes Alexei for a competitor, and (angrily and loudly) starts demanding "his" cut: Alexei just "stole" his contract! This quickly escalates to the point where they starts fighting in front of the children, which ruins the whole "magic" for them. While the part about the phone was likely unavoidable, had Alexei bothered to ask anyone to confirm his identity (actor didn't believe that Alexei is really an intern), or just suggested to go to Kisegach, the whole mess could have been avoided.
  • Port Manteau: What would happen if you combine "Kupitman" and "Cognac"? Kupignac — this's how Kupitman decided to call his new moonshine. The final result tastes and smells just as terribly as it's named.
  • Primal Scene: Sasha enters just when Alexei starts making love with Lena (note that they played Father Frost and Snegurochka for him; bonus points for Incest Subtext due to Father Frost being Snegurochka's grandfather); Alexei barely manages to cover Lena in time.
  • The Reveal: Bykov's "mysterious benefactor" who gifted him a new Segway turns out to be... Bykov himself; he just pretended to being surprised by a "sudden gift", because it would be funnier this way.
  • Rude Hero, Nice Sidekick: The actors whom Kisegach hired to play Father Frost and Snegurochka; the man is utter asshole who cares only about the money and nearly ruins everything for everyone, only playing his part when threatened by police (for attacking Alexei, whom he mistook for competitor), while the woman (called Lena) actually plays her role good and manages to make extremely awkward situation (caused by her partner's antics) into a part of the game, quickly re-learning children's trust in New Year. When her partner leaves, she befriends Lyosha, and even invites him to do something like this again next time (without her "partner", of course).
  • Sex Starts, Story Stops: For somebody who knows each other for less than a day, and learned each other's names less than an hour ago, Lyosha and Lena proceeds to making love a bit too quickly.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story:
    • Not only "Kupignac" turns out to be hopelessly terrible, Kupitman gets forced to sacrifice his entire collection of cognac to refill the keg, so he would at least have something to present during auction. Money he raises doesn't go anywhere near total cost of the lost alcohol.
    • Due to actor (whom Kisegach hired to play the Father Frost) showing up too late without warning, New Year show for children from Paediatric department (and especially for little boy Sasha, son of important investor) almost gets ruined, but Alexei manages to fix it by himself. Then the actor does show up and almost botches everything because he goes into violent conflict with Alexei in front of the children, both still dressed as Father Frost. After they barely manages to fix this... Alexei ruins everything completely, because Sasha enters on him having sex with actress who played Snegurochka. Naturally, Sasha's father cuts all ties with Kisegach.
  • Stealing the Credit: Gleb doesn't know who gifted Bykov that Segway; since Bykov knows nothing either, Gleb decides to take the credit for himself in hope to earn some points with Bykov (who likes this gift very much). It doesn't work... because Bykov bought it himself. Gleb then gets punished with ten night shifts for blatantly lying to him: five for lying to him as his boss, and five for lying to him as his step-father.
  • A Tankard of Moose Urine: After so much build-up, "Kupignac" turns out to be so terrible, not even Kuptiman himself can bear its taste — or its smell — and throws out.
Rita [upon smelling "Kupignac"]: Foo, Kupitman, something died down here?..
