Recap / The Interns S 11 E 18

Go To

Phil's friend provides him with opportunity to spend a whole month in Spain, in his personal house, and all he needs to do is to ask Kupitman. He isn't sure that this is a good idea, but, convinced but Lyuba, tries anyway, in hope that Kupitman would understand that it's once-per-life chance. Kupitman refuses, in rather rude way. Lyuba suggests to make him drunk (drunk Kupitman is a nice Kupitman), but Phil fears that this would just result in Kupitman forgetting all his drunk promises once he sobers up. Lyuba has a solution for this, too: use a dictaphone; Kupitman wouldn't ignore such evidence: if he actually gave his word, he would follow it. Phil tries that plan, and convinces Kupitman to drink with him. Unfortunately, Kupitman has way better alcohol tolerance than Phil, so Phil falls drunk first. Lyuba, being the only one capable to "match" Kupitman in this regard, offers to "prepare" Kupitman for Phil's next attempt, asking only for a souvenirs from Spain in return. The plan goes well at first, but then Kupitman decides to leave to visit his girlfriend. But Lyuba has another plan left: Phil must "overdrink" Kupitman (who's not exactly sober already), which would be made easier by Phil taking certain preparations (certain food, special pills, etc) to increase his alcohol tolerance.

Alexei's patient rejects him; she bases her motivation on... horoscope, stating that, being a Taurus, Lyosha has a "major probability to make fatal mistake today". Alexei asks Sophia (Scorpio) to help... and patient rejects her, too, because her horoscope suggests her (Capricorn) to "avoid Sagittarius and (especially) Scorpios". Why? Apparently, just because. Too afraid to tell Bykov about their failure, the interns lies to him that everything is fine. They tries to demonstrate to the patient that horoscopes never actually works, by bringing several different ones, which blatantly contradicts each other. Unfortunately, she doesn't care what other horoscopes says, as she only trusts her own, which was prepared by "expert with great experience" whom she knows. Ultimately, Bykov still finds out (as they wasted two days without results), and reacts just as they've expected. Then he decides to face the patient himself. Bykov sides with interns, and explains to the patient, in details, what would happen with her if she continues refusing treatment; the perspectives described scares her so much, she not only complies, but also throws away her horoscope. Interns still gets punished, however, as Bykov just in one short speech resolved what took them more than two days without results.

Semyon has problems with Olga, partially because of their now non-existent sex life, and partially because they rarely even talks with each other now; he asks Gleb for help. Because Olga keeps justifying her refusals with her "being tired" (despite seemingly nothing changing), Semyon starts suspecting that she's cheating on him. Semyon then learns that Olga would work late today, and decides to spy on her — only to get caught immediately and angrily ordered to leave, as he was supposed to stay with their daughter. Semyon "explains" it as him playing hide-and-seek with Gleb. Lobanov then recruits Gleb to distract Olga, while Semyon would check her PC and learn whether it contains any evidences of her infidelity. Unfortunately for him, Gleb fails to buy enough time, and Semyon finds nothing useful in so little time; worse, he fails to completely turn off everything, and gets forced to just shut PC down entirely by ejecting the plug, then tries to hide under the table, where he predictably gets caught. He again uses the "hide-and-seek" excuse and leaves. This results in Olga losing all her work, and spending a night in the office to redo it — which Lobanov takes as a possible excuse to meet her lover right in the hospital. Lobanov confronts Olga directly, who tells him that she didn't cheat on him — and that she has too little time and too little energy to properly rest, being busy with both their daughter and her work; and Semyon refuses to see this, despite being told multiple times! These accusations is the last straw; she wants nothing to do with him ever again. Depressed, Semyon goes to Phil to drink with him; Phil, in his alcohol-induced stupidity, overwrites his recording of Kupitman allowing him a vacation... with himself "gifting" this vacation to Semyon. He realises this only when he plays it in front of Kupitman. Accidentally, this is what saves Semyon't marriage after all: long sea vacation is just what Olga needs.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Phil was very close to actually trick Kupitman into giving him permission to go on a month-long vacation... but he overwrites the evidence of Kupitman's drunk promise with himself gifting this vacation to Semyon. Interestingly, this is what saves Semyon's marriage in the end.
  • All for Nothing: Phil, ultimately, manages to obtain the permission from Kupitman... but overwrites it with him gifting the voyage to Lobanov as result of his Alcohol-Induced Idiocy.
  • Blatant Lies: When Semyon uses "we just playing 'hide-and-seek' with Gleb" excuse for the first time (when he was caught in the lobby by Olga), he looks immature, but it's at least plausible. He tries it again even after he gets caught in her office, under her table (despite Olga knowing that Gleb is currently in a dinner room). What looked silly the first time, when tried the second time, looks either as a very blatant lie or a very childish behaviour; fortunately for Semyon, Olga takes it as the second.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Whenever Phil tries to drink with either Kupitman or Lyuba, he becomes drunk and falls asleep very quickly. This is a problem, because in order to achieve his goal (being allowed to go on a month-long vacancy in Spain), he must "overdrink" Kupitman (while sober, Kupitman is vehemently against it) and remain sane enough to record him giving his promise. After multiple failed attempts, Lyuba starts "preparing" Phil by taking several preemptive measurements which are supposed to raise his alcohol tolerance.
  • Horrorscope: Alexei and Sophia's patient is a die-hard fan of horoscopes, who applies them to everything, no matter how little sense they make — and uses them to justify refusing following their orders. Unfortunately, they can't just admit their defeat to Bykov, and must find a workaround.
    • Judging by one of her horoscopes, she rejected Alexei because he is a Taurus and has a "major probability to make fatal mistake today". Seems at least somewhat plausible? Then Lyosha asks Sophia (Scorpio) to help... and patient rejects Sophia because her horoscope suggests the Capricorns (like herself) to avoid Sagittarius and "especially" Scorpio (without any explanation whatsoever).
    • After wasting entire day because of her stubborn refusals, they tries again on the next day. Unfortunately, while this time horoscopes tells nothing bad about Tauruses and Scorpios... they warns Capricorns to not "make any important decisions today". Patient promptly ignores Sophia's point that she makes no decisions, and just trusts them in doing their job.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: After he realises just how close he is to losing Olga permanently, Semyon can only ask Phil for some cognac: he just fucked up his marriage, and needs to drown his depression.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Semyon starts suspecting that Olga is cheating on him (otherwise, why she suddenly started refusing sleeping with him, always stating "being tired", despite nothing seemingly changing?). After failing to spy on her by himself, he hires Gleb to act as distraction, so Semyon may check Olga's PC. This fails, too, and he just confronts her directly... and learns that not only she didn't cheat on him, but that her condition is caused by severe stress due to being overloaded with both her work and their child, while Semyon is indifferent and provides no support. Accusations proves themselves to be the last straw, and she decides to end her relationship with Semyon. Fortunately, Lobanov later manages to salvage the situation.
  • Never My Fault: Semyon suspects that Olga is cheating on him, basing on her denying him sex and just rarely talking with him in general (always stating that she's "tired")... completely refusing to see that this is because she's very busy with both the work and their child, and has little time to even rest. Him accusing Olga directly almost leads to her breaking up with him.
  • Put on a Bus: Semyon and Olga takes a month-long vacation in the end of the episode, disappearing from the plot for quite some time.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: When Semyon directly asks Olga whether she's cheating on him, she asks him just when he expects her to find a new lover if she spends so much time on her job and on their child that she has little left to even rest properly, which then proceeds into calling Semyon himself out on his selfishness and inability to own his mistakes. In fact, this almost leads to their second divorce.
Olga: Wow, how emotional we are... New lover, you say? Just when? Maybe, during the whole year I spent sitting with our baby twenty four hours per day? Or when I resumed working here from morning till evening, with little time left to rest? When?
Semyon: Well, I don't know; you're the one to know!
Olga: Of course, you don't know! You don't want to! You don't care about anything! You don't care how tired I get at this job; you don't care how tired I get at home; you don't care how tired I am of all this! I keep telling you this, but you never listen and never see this, because you're busy playing "hide and seek" with Gleb! Because you're "busy"!
    Semyon: Olya, wait...
Olga: Lobanov, go screw yourself. I don't want to see you. I don't want to live with you.
  • To the Pain: Bykov provides Alexei and Sophia's patient with his own "horoscope"; it involves her suffering from highly unpleasant symptoms (amongst them heavy heartburn and violent diarrhea), caused by her stubborn refusal to accept the treatment for her digestive system — and this is just for today; in the long run, she may expect a "family trip to one beautiful, quiet place, where she would spend the rest of eternity in peace". It works so well, she not only doesn't object to him, but throws away her horoscope once Bykov leaves.
