Recap / The Batman S 2 E 2 Riddled

Go To

Batman and Detective Yin work together to solve a string of riddles which have been scattered throughout Gotham.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Actor Allusion: The riddle Riddler asks Batman before knocking him out is, “What question can you never answer ‘Yes’ to?”, to which he then provides the answer as Batman’s losing consciousness, by eerily whispering, “Are you asleep?” This could be a subtle reference to Robert Englund’s most famous role, Freddy Krueger.
  • Cassandra Truth: Riddler revealed to Rojas that Yin was working with Batman. Rojas doesn't believe it.... at first.
  • Dramatic Irony: At the end of the episode, Chief Rojas refuses to believe the Riddler when he tells that Yin is working with Batman, he says how the Riddler would know when Batman was never seen the whole night. He is completely unaware that Batman was the one solving the Riddler's puzzles while Yin was just helping him.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Riddler’s initial reaction when he meets Yin as the one who “solved” the riddle at the beginning. This is justified later, as he had set up the whole thing specifically for Batman.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Riddler is defeated by his own lie detector.
  • Honor Before Reason: Despite capturing Batman, along with Detective Yin, and having the chance to unmask Batman while he is restrained, the Riddler would rather have Batman play his game so he solve his identity.
  • Lie Detector: Riddler tries to use one to deduce Batman's identity, with the device shocking Yin if it picks up a lie. This is later exploited by Batman when Riddler is tricked into getting close to the mechanism.
Batman: (regarding Riddler's previous query) The answer to "am I a policeman?" Yes.
  • Pet the Dog: Chief Rojas does praise Yin for seemingly solving the Riddler's puzzles and capturing him.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: “What's black and blue and green all over?
    • Also, Yin's "Riddle for you... who's next?"
  • Snipe Hunt: The Riddler's master plan involves sending the heroes out to disarm devices around the city filled with a mysterious substance (actually lime gelatin) while he steals the city's data. Too bad for him that he can't help but slip hints to his real crime when taunting Yin.
  • The Unmasking: Riddler attempts to do this on Batman.
  • Villain Reveals the Secret: At the end of the episode, Riddler reveals to Chief Rojas that Yin is working together with Batman. Fortunately for Yin, Rojas doesn’t believe him.
