"Nothing can ruin this night."

"Okay. There's too many of you to take down to the station. So, I'll be interviewing you all here. And I wanna talk to every single one of you. Because the truth is, any one of you could be the murderer."
Danner

Detective Danner and her partner Detective Culp arrive at the home of pop star/actor Xavier (né Eugene Duckworth Jr.), who was killed by falling from the balcony of his Bay Area mansion. Though her captain insists that she is only to take witness testimonies and the case-solving is to be left to a detective acquaintance of hers from LA, Danner insists on taking charge of the case, and begins questioning the suspects.

The suspects are members of Xavier's high school class, who had been at his home for an afterparty from their 15th Class Reunion. One attendee, Indigo, tells Danner in a pretentious black and white film style that another, Aniq, had angrily gone upstairs very shortly before Xavier's body was found.

Danner interviews Aniq, whose narration is framed like a Romantic Comedy. He had attended the reunion hoping to reconnect with his crush Zoë, who had recently divorced her husband Brett. Though Xavier flirts with Zoë, Yasper helps Aniq get Zoë alone. They walk around the school and run into their class president Chelsea. A kiss at the bleachers, however, is interrupted by the arrival of Zoë's daughter Maggie.

Zoë confronts Brett and is swept away by Xavier. Yasper drives Aniq and Chelsea to Xavier's house, avoiding a furious Brett. At the afterparty, Aniq is suddenly woozy and passes out. He awakens with his pants down and scribbles on his face. After his interview, Aniq finds a threatening note in the bathroom, while Brett is caught by the police.

Tropes:

  • Almost Kiss: Aniq and Zoë are just about to kiss at the bleachers before being interrupted by Zoë's daughter.
  • Coincidental Broadcast: As the characters are being detained in Xavier’s house following his death, they turn on the TV to see a news report on his death, providing exposition to the audience on who he is.
  • Deliberate Monochrome: Indigo's recollection of events is portrayed in black and white to make it look like a pretentious art film.
  • Gilligan Cut: The show is introduced with Aniq confidently declaring that nothing could ruin the night before a Smash Cut to Xavier falling to his death with a bloodcurdling scream.
  • Meet Cute: In Aniq’s testimony, him and Zoë have an adorable reconnection while fumbling over a bunch of balloons. Fitting, as his story is framed as a Romantic Comedy. Danner even lampshades it as a "meet-cute".
  • Pass the Popcorn: Detective Danner helps herself to a bag of popcorn when Aniq is starting his statement. It's suggested to be a part of her "We're all the stars of our own movie" mantra, as she has popcorn on hand while listening to every suspect's testimony.
  • Romantic Rain: Rain falls on Aniq and Zoë as they are having a romantic moment on the bleachers. Zoë lampshades the improbability of such an event.
  • Romantic Wingman: Yasper acts as this to Aniq in his Romantic Comedy recollection — Yasper encourages him to get with Zoë and steals Xavier away to give them alone time.
  • Sherlock Scan: Danner is able to identify Zoe as an artist by the ink stains on her hands. This is later confirmed in Aniq's testimony when she shows him a mural she helped the students paint.
  • Stylistic Suck: Indigo's testimony is done in the style of Le Film Artistique, complete with stilted and overwrought dialogue.
