Recap / The Addams Family S 1 E 18 Uncle Festers Illness

Go To

Uncle Fester's a bit rundown, literally unable to maintain his wattage. Since he can't light up bulbs, he's worried that he may ruin an upcoming family outing of spelunking. With their family Witch Doctor, Dr. Mbogo, being too busy to make house calls, the Addamses have no choice but to take their chances with a local doctor.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Bizarre Human Biology: Uncle Fester produces electricity, which comes in handy for lighting bulbs and wrecking electric trains.
  • Everything Sounds Sexier in French: Morticia does this while reminiscing about their second honeymoon in Niagara Falls, leading Gomez to give her a Kiss Up the Arm.
Gomez: Tish! When you speak French you drive me wild! Speak some more French, Tish! Anything! Tout à l'heure. La plume de ma tante. Mademoiselle from Armentieres! Anything!
  • Extreme Omnivore: While having his temperature taken, Uncle Fester eats a thermometer. When the doctor hurriedly leaves without his medical bag, Fester eats a tongue depressor. He finds both quite tasty.
  • Improbable Antidote: Uncle Fester is cured when he eats a thermometer, as it turns out he had a mercury deficiency.
  • It's All My Fault: Uncle Fester blames himself for ruining the outing.
Uncle Fester: I'm an outing pooper.
  • Mistaken for Disease: Thing behaves lethargically, leading Morticia and Gomez to believe he is also sick. It turns out that Thing was just sad about the prospect of having to cancel the outing.
  • Moonburn: This happens to Uncle Fester when he tries moonbathing as a cure. Grandmama had given him some of her goose grease as moonscreen, but he thought it was to eat.
  • Ordered Apology: Gomez insists that Lurch apologize to Uncle Fester for refusing to bring down Fester's bed of nails so he could get some relaxation.
Gomez: Lurch, I'm afraid you're going to have to apologize to Uncle Fester.
    [Lurch groans.]
    Gomez: That's better.
Morticia: Dear Lurch. He express himself so well.
  • Sick Episode: Uncle Fester can't maintain his wattage.
  • Unusual Pets for Unusual People: Wednesday has spiders as pets and had been looking forward to getting some more on the outing.
  • Witch Doctor: Dr. Mbogo, the Addamses' family doctor. He once cured Gomez's pneumonia by dousing him with kerosene and pouring ashes over his head.
Morticia: Sometimes the old-fashioned remedies are best.
  • Wrong Assumption: Morticia asks Uncle Fester if he's been getting enough moonshine. She's talking about moonlight, but he thinks she means alcohol.
Uncle Fester: Morticia! You know I don't drink.
