Tropes

  • And Show It to You: Belphegor rips out the dead sheriff's heart to use in his binding spell.
  • The Anti-Nihilist: As far as Sam's concerned, it doesn't matter that everything they did was part of Chuck's sick game — they still saved people, and that's what matters. Plus, since it seems God has moved on to create another universe (i.e. another story), so he won't be messing with the brothers anymore.
  • Badass Boast: Dean, when he and Sam realize the scope of their situation.
Dean: You and me vs every soul in Hell? I like those odds.
  • Blood-Splattered Innocents: The mother and daughter whom Sam and Cas rescue from John Wayne Gacy have fresh blood stains all over their clothes.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: Belphegor on black-eyed demons.
Belphegor: I'm not even one of those black-eyed goons who crawled his way up here to eat, you know virgins and puppies and, uh, virgin puppies.
  • Call-Back:
    • Every time one of the evil ghosts the Winchesters encountered before shows up, there's a series of quick flashes to their previous appearance on the show. The Woman in White, in particular, states that she remembers Dean from the pilot.
    • Belphegor mentions Dean's time as Alastair's apprentice when he was in Hell, saying that he was a fan.
    • The last shot of the episode is Sam saying "We've got work to do" while shutting the trunk of the Impala, complete with a brief flash to the exact same closing shot in the pilot.
  • Clothing-Concealed Injury: Belphegor possesses Jack's dead body, but has to wear sunglasses to cover up his eyes, which had exploded in the previous episode.
  • Desecrating the Dead: Castiel isn't happy that Belphegor is possessing Jack's dead body and nearly smites him until Dean and Sam convince him that, at the moment, he is their best option to make it out alive.
  • Enemy Mine: The demon Belphegor teams up with the Winchesters to return all the souls to Hell, as otherwise the demons have nothing to do.
  • Gas Leak Cover-Up: The Winchesters manufacture a story about a massive gas leak to evacuate the town under siege from the ghosts.
  • Knew It All Along: Dean knew there was something about Chuck/God he didn't like.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Sam and Dean, when they realize all their monsters of the week are potentially back.
    • Dean has another one when Belphegor states that all the doors in Hell were opened, including the Cage, suggesting that their universe's Michael may be free again. But as of now, he isn't moving from there.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Belphegor actually uses the term "punch clock" when describing his job in Hell.
Belphegor: Look, Downstairs I punch a clock. A soul comes in, I torment it, it's what I do.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: As a temporary measure until they can send the evil souls back to Hell, the Winchesters and Belphegor cast a spell to trap them in the town they're attacking.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: The bullet wound Sam got from the Equalizer, which Cas can't heal, citing a strange energy in it.
