Recap / Supernanny USS 7 EP 5

Go To

The fifth episode of the seventh season of the US version of Supernanny.

Jo visits Oak View, Califonia, where she meets Kevin and Jessica Van Acker. Kevin and Jessica have two children; six-year-old Emma and three-year-old Dylan. Dylan has relentless tantrums, constantly demands sugary snacks over healthy foods, and refuses to be potty-trained. Can Jo help Kevin and Jessica discipline Dylan and get him to eat healthy foods and use the potty?

This episode provides examples of:

  • Blowing a Raspberry: Dylan does this to Jo when she greets the Van Acker family.
  • Broken Record: Jo lampshades this trope when discussing Dylan Van Acker's constant demands for a diaper (he's over three years old and refuses to be potty-trained). Jo repeats "Diaper, diaper, diaper" in the confessional, in a somewhat robotic fashion.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: As cute as Dylan is, he is one of the biggest offenders when it comes to screaming.
  • Go to Your Room!: Jessica punishes Dylan for disrupting Emma when she's trying to do her homework by sending him to his bedroom, where he plays with his trains. Jo discourages this method of discipline because bedrooms are where children sleep and play, so she implements the Naughty Chair.
  • Not So Above It All: While Emma is the more well-behaved of the two children, she isn't immune to misbehaving just to get some attention from Kevin and Jessica. After Jo leaves to let Kevin and Jessica handle things by themselves, Emma hits Jessica and gets a time-out from her.
  • Picky Eater: Dylan was so picky an eater that he had developed anemia as a result of his unhealthy diet. Jo had to remedy this by encouraging Kevin and Jessica to serve him foods that were rich in iron, like chicken and peas.
  • Product Displacement:
    • During a scene where the Van Acker family eat dinner, a bottle of Heinz tomato ketchup can be seen on the table, but the Heinz logo has black tape placed over it.
    • During the scene where Jessica is trying to change Dylan into a new pair of underwear, a Scooby-Doo plush on his bed is blurred out.
  • Pushover Parents: Kevin and Jessica end up giving into Dylan's demands for junk food and diapers, which ultimately results in him being anemic and not potty-trained. Jo tells Kevin and Jessica to stop being pushovers, and decides to help them discipline Dylan and not give into his demands.
  • Spoiled Brat: Dylan, full stop. He rules the Van Acker household with his tantrums, and constantly demands junk food and diapers, which is why he's anemic and not potty-trained. Jo helps Kevin and Jessica discipline him, give him healthier foods to eat, and potty-train him.
  • Sweet Tooth: Dylan had this, developing such an extreme dependence on sweets that he got anemia.
  • Teeny Weenie: One of the excuses that Dylan makes when Jessica tries to get him to use his potty is that his wiener is too small. This moment was shown on such talk shows as The Soup and Lopez Tonight, and in the latter, Jo tells George Lopez this:
Jo: He was just so innocent with it, he just looked at me, and he went, "Jo-Jo, my weenie... wiener's too small!" What am I gonna tell this boy? What if his parents are gonna tell him when he's sixteen and... it's great! The first stories he's gonna get at college, "And your wiener was too small."
  • Toilet Training Plot: Jo helps Kevin and Jessica potty-train Dylan, who is three years old and does everything he can to avoid using the potty and wearing big-boy underwear.
  • Trapped at the Dinner Table: Dylan is anemic due in part to being a picky eater. When Jo helps Kevin and Jessica enforce discipline, they serve him a dinner of chicken and peas because they are rich in iron, and refuse to let him leave the table until he eats four pieces of chicken and two peas. Dylan throws a huge fit and makes excuses to avoid having to eat his dinner.
  • The Unfavorite: A mild case with Emma. She is loved, but is often overlooked because of Dylan's shrieking and bad behavior.
