Recap / Sue Thomas FB Eye S 2 E 16 Elvis Is In The Building

Go To

To help the bureau keep a heroin shipment off the streets and catch a Chinese smuggler, Tommy Chen, Bobby goes undercover as an Elvis impersonator at the guy's nightclub. However, the situation becomes darker when they realize that Tommy has killed his boss and may be planning a power bid. Meanwhile, Troy's estranged brother comes to visit, and Sue finds herself caught in the middle as she tries to make peace.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Bobby's actor, Rick Peters, actually played Elvis in Elvis Meets Nixon.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Troy and Ben are not on good terms, which turns out to be because of their school days. Before then, they were very close. However, Ben started noticing that Troy was treated as different because he was deaf, and Ben became "different" by association. Unwilling to deal with that, he pulled away from his brother.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Tommy invites Bobby to work out with him, the agents think it's a sign Bobby has won his favor. It was actually an opportunity to punch him and warn him not to save Tommy's girlfriend again.
  • Becoming the Mask: Bobby and Myles go undercover as an Elvis impersonator and his manager. During the episode, Myles starts giving Bobby advice on his performance and signs off a phone call with "Ciao, baby" (which weirds out Lucy). Bobby himself begins to insist that Myles call him "the King."
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Tommy Chen doesn't like any other guy getting close to his girlfriend, Nancy, to the point that she implies he's been known to kill people for it. After Bobby "saves" her from a guy's aggressive advances, Tommy punches him, saying that they have people who are supposed to handle that kind of thing.
  • Elvis Impersonator: Bobby turns out to be good at copying Elvis' speech and musical style. In character, he wears a costume but doesn't dye his hair or use a wig.
  • Fake Danger Gambit: The FBI zeroes in on Tommy's girlfriend, Nancy, as the weak link; she's tried to get out several times. To show Nancy that Bobby is someone she can trust, the team stages a scene at the nightclub. Dmitrius plays the role of an aggressive patron, who keeps flirting with Nancy against her will and even tries to drag her off. Bobby makes him leave her alone. Unfortunately, this draws Tommy's jealous rage.
  • Forgiveness: Troy's brother hurt him badly when they were younger, and Troy is convinced he only came to visit because he wants something. Sue tries to mend things, and she ultimately succeeds.
  • Functional Addict: Chen's girlfriend Nancy/Bunny is revealed to be addicted to heroin late in the episode, when she discusses undergoing rehab. Nancy plays a major role in running the nightclub and is well-dressed and well-groomed. Up to that moment, the viewer probably wouldn't suspect she was using anything that major.
  • I'll Kill You!: Tommy swears he'll kill his girlfriend after she disappears (into an FBI safe area). This makes the agents even more alarmed when Nancy leaves with him.
  • Lost My Appetite: Jack and Sue enlist Howie to infiltrate a meat-packing plant that Chen also owns. After spending some time there, he comments that the experience caused him to turn vegetarian.
  • Meaningful Echo: During dinner, Ben and Troy show off their childhood Secret Handshake. The dinner ends poorly when Troy becomes convinced that his brother only wanted to talk to him again because his deafness would help him teach his brother how to handle his own deaf son. At the end of the episode, Troy decides to give his brother another chance, and he learns that Ben already taught his nephew the handshake.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Ben introduces his wife, who demonstrates that she can sign. Then they reveal that their son is also deaf, and Ben figured that there was no one better than his brother to teach him how to communicate with and bond with his son. Troy becomes furious, seeing it as confirmation that Ben only wanted to patch up their relationship for his own benefit. Ben insists that wasn't how he meant it.
  • Public Domain Soundtrack: Bobby auditions for a job as an Elvis impersonator as part of an undercover operation. He sings the public domain hymn "Battle Hymn of the Republic"; although Elvis did sing it, it's not exactly the type of song you'd expect to hear at a nightclub. It still impresses his "employer", though.
  • Shaped Like Itself: as they discuss infiltrating a Chinese gang:
Myles: The reason Chinese gangs are called Chinese gangs is that all the members of the gangs... tend to be Chinese.
Lucy: How do you do it, Myles? Always so insightful.
