Recap / Star Wars: The Clone Wars Legacy – "In Search of the Crystal"

Go To

The two Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, depart Pau City on their dactillion mounts for the plains of Utapau. While traveling, Kenobi spots a village ahead. This village is inhabited by several Plains Amani, who begin throwing spears at the Jedi visitors. Despite Kenobi's warnings, Skywalker dives from his mount and attacks the Amani. During the ensuing skirmish, the Amani attack the Jedi with blasters that fire precision laser darts. Before the Jedi can question them, all of the Amani flee into the wilderness.

While inspecting the camp, Kenobi discovers several unusual footprints which he assumed belong to the Amani leader. While traveling on foot, Skywalker mentions his former Padawan Ahsoka Tano, for the first time since her departure. While setting up camp, the two Jedi talk about Ahsoka's decision to leave the Jedi Order. Skywalker chastises the Jedi Council for not standing by Ahsoka during her trial and for causing her to leave the Order. In response, Kenobi argues that it was her own decision to make and that she let her emotion cloud her judgement, something against the Jedi way. Skywalker then moves on to question how Kenobi would feel if he failed him, something Kenobi doesn't want to talk about.

As Kenobi begins to sleep, he instructs Skywalker to remain on guard. However, Skywalker disobeyed his orders and fell asleep. The following morning, the two Jedi are captured by several Sugi warriors who were accompanied by an Amani. While the Sugi take their lightsabers, Kenobi reprimands his former apprentice for falling asleep while on duty. Unwilling to take the blame, Skywalker claimed that he had intentionally fallen asleep in order to get the Sugi to lead them to their camp.

The Sugi then lead the Jedi back to their camp. Assuming that the Sugi are "primitives", the two Jedi openly talk about their escape plans. On the way, Skywalker tricked one of his Sugi captors into activating his lightsaber. The lightsaber blade went through the Sugi's head, killing him. Chong, the leading Sugi then reveals that he can speak and understand Galactic Basic. When he interrogated the Jedi, Kenobi made up the story that he and Anakin were arms dealers who had traveled all the way to the Outer Rim Territories to buy arms from them. The Sugi leader responds that he has to talk with his boss.

The two Jedi and their Sugi captors then travel to several mounds where they encounter the Sugis' boss Endente and several more Sugi. While not revealing his name to the Jedi, he assumed that Kenobi and Skywalker had come to purchase the crystal. Endente revealed that he had already promised the crystal to the Separatist military leader General Grievous. The two Jedi then offered to pay double the price but Endente rejected their offer. While being led to the crystal, Kenobi assumed that it was a kyber crystal. Ahead, the two Jedi spotted a large starship, that is covered in canvas.

Back at the spaceship, Endente contacts Count Dooku who orders him to kill the two Jedi. When Endente revealed that the Jedi had offered twice the price and demanded more compensation, Dooku promised that he would send General Grievous to "give him what he deserved." Meanwhile, the Sugi lead their Jedi prisoners to another chamber but their captives managed to break free. Under fire from their Sugi captors, the two Jedi flee above the ceiling and eventually make their way into a weapons arsenal storeroom. While Skywalker arms himself with two blaster pistols, Kenobi prefers to use his Force powers.

After sensing a gang of Sugi at the door, the two Jedi plant smoke detonators which blind the Sugi. Skywalker then uses the Force to pick out the Sugi and kills several of them with his blasters. When Chong appears with their lightsabers, Anakin uses the Force to activate them, killing him as well. Endente flees on one of the Sugi while ordering the other Sugi to hold back the Jedi. Despite their best efforts, Endente manages to flee on a speeder into the wilderness. While examining the ship, the two Jedi discover a large kyber crystal hanging on the rafters and decide to depart on the starship for space.

Tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Anakin angrily questions Obi-Wan on what would happen if he become a disappointment and left the order. The latter thinks that will never happen, although it's implied he has some fears about it.
  • Auction: Anakin and Obi-Wan trick Endente and the Sugi into doing this so that they can lead them to the secret weapon.
  • Call-Back: Anakin hasn't forgotten Ahsoka leaving the Jedi Order and the events that are responsible for it.
  • Call-Forward: Obi-Wan and Anakin talk about betrayal and loss, and when Anakin questions how Obi-Wan would take it if Anakin betrayed him, Obi-Wan simply states that he has faith it will never come to that. It will.
  • Dramatic Irony: Anakin and Obi-Wan eventually have a conversation about what would happen if Anakin betrayed Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan expresses his faith in Anakin as a person and affirms his belief that Anakin is a good person who would never turn on the Jedi and Obi-Wan. Anakin will do exactly that.
  • Mister Big: Endente.
  • Never My Fault: Despite Anakin giving some solid points about the Jedi's wrong actions, Obi-Wan surprisingly diminishes the severity of them and says that Ahsoka chose to leave of her own free will, ignoring the fact that the Council was fully responsible when they decide to cast her out.
  • Power Crystal: The Jedi learn that the Sugi is attempting to sell the Separatists an extremely large Kyber crystal.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: In past episodes, many characters crawled around in ventilation ducts to either sneak around or escape. When Anakin and Obi-Wan try to do this in the Sugi ship to escape from some mooks, they learn the hard way that the vents are incredibly cramped.
  • Too Dumb to Live:
    • While escorting their Jedi prisoners across Utapau's plains, one of the Sugi curiously examines Anakin's lightsaber, including looking right at the blade emitter. Given that the owner of that saber knows telekinesis and has fewer reservations for underhanded violence than other Jedi, this results in said Sugi getting a laser through the face.
    • Even after that incident, Chong continues to hold onto the Jedi's lightsabers. Once he confronts them during the Jedi's escape attempt, Anakin wastes no time using the Force to activate the sabers from Chong's belt and slice him to ribbons.
