Recap / Seinfeld S4 E3 "The Pitch"

Go To

Jerry is approached by NBC about creating a new television show. Meanwhile, Kramer swaps a radar detector for a helmet with Newman, which Newman later finds is defective when he receives a speeding ticket.

Tropes:

  • Big "NO!": Susan screams one as Kramer vomits on her.
  • Celebrity Paradox: The NBC lobby is adorned with posters for its current shows, one of them being Reasonable Doubts, a legal drama starring Mark Harmon and Marlee Matlin, who are featured on the poster. Marlee Matlin later guest-starred as Jerry's (deaf) girlfriend of the week in the episode "The Lip Reader" the following season.
  • Continuity Nod: One of the episode ideas George gives Jerry for the "show about nothing" is them and Elaine waiting for a table at a Chinese restaurant.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Jerry notices Kramer is drinking milk from his fridge and asks what is the expiration date on the milk carton. Kramer nonchalantly replies "September 3rd". Jerry shouts "The 3rd?" and George and Susan quizzically say in unison "The 3rd?" just before Kramer throws up on Susan.
  • The Food Poisoning Incident: Kramer grabs a carton of milk out of Jerry's refrigerator and drinks, unaware that it had already expired. As a result, Kramer falls ill very quickly and vomits on Susan.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: More specifically, a Vomit Discretion Cut, when Kramer, having drunk the expired milk, vomits all over Susan the NBC executive's vest.
  • Way Past the Expiration Date: Kramer gets sick from drinking milk in Jerry's refrigerator that had expired on September 3rd. By the episode's airdate, the milk will have gone been bad two weeks past its expiration date.
  • Who Would Want to Watch Us?: Basically the entire premise of the episode. Jerry's initial reaction to George's idea of the show "about nothing" based on Jerry's life (which is, of course, the whole point of the show itself) is to dismisses it as a bad idea. Then he shoots down ideas for episodes based on actual past episodes of the show.
