Recap / Seinfeld S4 E4 "The Ticket"

Go To

Jerry and George get the go ahead for their pilot from NBC executives, and Kramer agrees to be Newman's alibi for a speeding ticket.

Tropes:

  • Courtroom Episode: The B-plot is about Kramer and Newman going to court to contest the latter's traffic ticket.
  • Driven to Suicide: Supposedly Newman had to break traffic law to save Kramer because Kramer was going to kill himself because he could not become a banker.
  • Ham-to-Ham Combat: in universe, Newman's perjury scheme falls apart because he and Kramer become too excited going at each other while Kramer is on the witness stand.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • Newman loses his cool entirely when Kramer (suffering from a concussion after being kicked in the head by Joe Davola) forgets the alibi they rehearsed while in court, and then claims that he wants a recess to help Kramer compose himself.
Newman: Your Honour, Mr. Kramer is clearly very distraught!
      Kramer: I'm distraught?
    • George had spent this and the previous episode insisting that he and Jerry would get at least $50,000 from NBC for their sitcom idea, and is then furious when they only offer $13,000. Which is precisely why he dismisses Newman asking if they're getting at least $50,000 by claiming that money isn't important. Particularly funny given that George is possibly the cheapest character on the show and the biggest money-grubber.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Newman's explanation for his speeding ticket.
  • Police Are Useless: one subplot has George and Jerry hiding in the diner because they are afraid Crazy Joe Davola is outside. A cop enters and Jerry asks the cop to escort them to a cab, but becomes increasingly irate as the cop delays, first to get a muffin and then a whole meal, and lingers for coffee.
