Recap / Rupert S 03 E 09 Rupert And The Sea Serpent

Go To

The Pigs and the Bears are on holiday at the same time in Rocky Bay, but Podgy isn't nearly as excited about it as Rupert — not when it means being forced to spend time with his cousin Rosalie. Rosalie isn't a big fan of the arrangement, either, and jumps on the opportunity to ditch the boys to go off on an adventure with a young sea serpent she befriends. Thinking she's in trouble, Rupert talks Podgy into helping him go look for her, but the more they learn, the more confusing things get. What exactly is her new friend so afraid of? Where did all the treasure come from? And why would it be so terrible if they got caught near it...?

The only episode where Rupert has co-ed companions, and the only time one of his inner circle of friends is part of the conflict he tries to resolve.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Clashing Cousins: Podgy and Rosalie
  • Continuity Nod: King Neptune found a safer place to store his treasure.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Rupert's dad packs enough beach equipment for an entire village, down to a potato spade (to dig for bait in case they want to fish).
  • Dragon Hoard: This time, the dragon isn't hoarding its own treasure but has been hired to guard someone else's.
  • Exact Words:
Rosalie: Aunt Lily made you promise to play with me after breakfast.
Podgy: But I didn't say how long after breakfast. I was thinking a couple of years would be about right.
  • Food as Bribe: The boys successfully bargain with a dolphin to take them to the island in exchange for Podgy's chocolate cake.
  • Hidden Depths: Rosalie initially acts like a prissy girly girl, complaining that swimming and playing on the beach is too dirty and preferring to dress up or read poetry, but she finds adventuring on a forbidden island with a sea serpent as fun as the boys do, doesn't hesitate to help what looks like a giant lizard despite being afraid, and rushes to defend her friend from what she thinks is a monster trying to eat him.
  • How Did Youknow I Didnt: Podgy gets this response when he asks Rupert how he knew improvising a makeshift boat out of a wheelbarrow, a beach umbrella, a rope, and a shovel would actually work...
  • Ironic Echo Cut:
    Podgy: She's impossible, Rupert!
    Rosalie: That Podgy is impossible!
  • Magnetic Hero: Rosalie can't stand Podgy, but she's perfectly nice to Rupert from the beginning (because he actually asks for her opinions and tries to include her in ways she'd find fun).
  • Monster Is a Mommy: The frightening dragon guarding King Neptune's treasure whom the kids spend several minutes running from in terror turns out to be Rosalie's friend's mother.
  • No Antagonist: Neither Rosalie, the sea serpent, nor anyone else qualifies — the conflict centers around the cousins' inability to get along, the climactic Chase Scene stems from a misunderstanding, and the worst crime anyone commits is trespassing.
  • "Not So Different" Remark:
Rupert: I think the reason Podgy and Rosalie don't get along is because they're so alike, but I wouldn't want to tell Podgy that.
  • Snipe Hunt: Podgy asks Rosalie to find a spotted starfish to decorate their sandcastle, knowing she's so stubborn that if she thinks it's out there, she won't stop until she finds it.
