Recap / Rupert S 01 E 02 Rupert And The Sage Of Um

Go To

Rupert and Tiger Lily travel to Um Island to help the Sage of Um protect the island’s last herd of unicorns from a young boy with magic powers who wants their horns.

First appearances of Tiger Lily and the Sage of Um.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Big Damn Hero: Rupert gets to play the action hero in the climax, flying in on the Sage’s flying umbrella to rescue the unicorns as they’re about to have their horns cut off.
  • Changed My Mind, Kid: The last unicorn is too afraid to help when Rupert first asks her, but finds the courage to join him later.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: The boy’s magical abilities come from his hat.
  • Dispel Magic: By combining their powers, the unicorns are able to undo the Enchanter’s spells.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Rupert’s always the one talking the antagonists into reforming... except here, where it’s solely the Sage who does that, while Rupert, who otherwise always prefers diplomacy to fighting, saves the unicorns by fighting the Enchanter and his griffin with the Sage’s flying ‘brella.
  • Flying on a Cloud: Tiger Lily makes a magic cloud to fly them to Um Island.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The boy eventually feels sorry for what he’s done. The Sage not only forgives him but offers to teach him to use magic properly.
  • Incredible Shrinking Man: The Sage and Tiger Lily escape from their cell using his shrinking powder.
  • Inept Mage: To be fair, the Sage’s spells only keep going wrong because he keeps getting his magic powders mixed up.
  • Kneel Before Zod: The Enchanter orders Rupert and Tiger Lily to bow before him. Since he’s nothing more than a whiny kid throwing a tantrum, magic powers or no, they don’t.
  • No Name Given: Since the boy insists on only calling himself “The Great and Powerful Enchanter,” we never learn his real name.
  • Non-Protagonist Resolver: By Rupert standards. Rupert handles the physical part of the fight with the Enchanter and his griffin, but the Sage does Rupert’s usual job of reasoning with the antagonist and convincing him to change his ways.
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: Rupert inspires the only unicorn not to get captured to stand up to the Enchanter, who inspires the rest of the herd to band together and fight back.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Hey, the voice of the Enchanter is Julie Lemieux... who, starting next season, would be recognized as the voice of Rupert!
  • Suspect Is Hatless:
Sage: I need the purple pouch.
Tiger Lily: But... they’re all purple.
Sage: Yes, bit of a nuisance, that...
  • We Need a Distraction: Rupert distracts the Enchanter’s griffin so the unicorns can escape.
