Mordecai, Rigby, Muscle Man and High-Five Ghost cooperate to win a car sponsored by local radio station WHOZ disc jockey the Night Owl.

"The Night Owl" contains examples of:

  • Confession Cam: Exploited. Upon learning that all four would be sharing the car, the Night Owl uses an isolation booth to sow seeds of doubt among them by advising each one individually that a different one would be taking the car for himself.
  • Cyborg: In the future, the Night Owl is just his preserved head inside a mechanical owl-man.
  • Everything Is an iPod in the Future: The distant year of 4224 is full of whiteness and soft, rounded mechanics.
  • Faking the Dead: The final contestant is scared off the billboard by a silhouetted sight of Muscle Man seeming to murder Mordecai.
  • Human Popsicle: The Night Owl uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the four in their tent, keeping the contest in an endless stalemate for over two thousand years.
  • Museum of the Strange and Unusual: In the future, an entire museum has been dedicated to the Night Owl and his contest, with the billboard and unclaimed car as a centerpiece.
  • Never the Selves Shall Meet: Mordecai claims this is the case, stating that two instances of a person can never coexist, and the rest laugh it off. Then it pans over and shows the original timeline four stunned at their future selves' presence.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Or at least gets you cryogenically frozen. The four all get into a fight instead of just coming out and talking about their private talks with the Night Owl.
  • Ragnarök Proofing: The billboard and car are still in immaculate condition in the future; the car even starts without a problem. Considering the Night Owl's plan for the contest specifically involved the nitrogen even without dealing with cooperating contestants, this probably assumes Gasoline Lasts Forever, too.
  • Radio Contest: "The Standoff for the Steel". Specifically, the last person to be standing next to a WHOZ billboard wins a black vintage muscle car.
  • Time Machine: The museum has a time machine whose purpose is to allow travelers to go back to any day of the contest; the four use it to return to the present.
