Recap / Recess S 113 I Will Kick No More Forever

Go To

Vince is the best kickball player on the field. That changes when Ashley Q. scores a home run without even trying; Vince starts questioning his skills, getting Picked Last, and decides to quit kickball forever. When he starts spending days at home while bingeing on donuts and root beer, the gang resolves to give Vince his confidence back.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Answer Cut: After learning that Vince kicked a regular kickball into space, Gretchen wonders what happened to her glorp ball. It then cuts to Ms. Finster who had found it.
  • Confidence Building Scheme: The gang resolves to give Vince his confidence back. Gretchen has the idea of using a substance she made in her science class that bounces around and resembles a ball. T.J. says that they'll have Mikey fake an injury, Gus switch the balls, and Vince kick the glorp. It doesn't exactly go according to plan: Gus has to use the bathroom in the middle of the injury faking, leading to the glorp ball vanishing, but Vince regardless manages to kick the real ball into outer space.
  • Drunk on Milk: Vince spends a whole week at home drinking root beer and eating donuts, while depressed. Mikey tries to stop him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Lawson was mocking Vince for playing terribly and noting how the kid wasn't getting anything other than outs or strikes. He agrees with T.J., however, to the scheme to give Vince his confidence back. Whether it was because Vince was at home for a week or No Challenge Equals No Satisfaction, it's up to the viewers.
  • Heroic BSoD: Vince starts calling himself a loser after Ashley Q. outkicks him, culminating in him quitting kickball and bingeing on junk food while watching previous plays.
  • Hidden Depths: Ashley Q. has a strong kick and can score a home run, all while still talking on her phone.
  • Hyper-Destructive Bouncing Ball: Gretchen's glorp, which bounces in a cartoonish manner when it's so much as dropped. When Ms. Finster finds and confiscates it, it ends up bouncing all around the ball shed.
  • I'll Tell You When I've Had Enough!: Mikey tries to stop Vince from shoving donuts in his mouth, asking, "Don't you think you've had enough?" Vince wordlessly swallows them.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Miss Finster confiscated a ball sitting on a bench, just because it was disorderly. When she puts it away, the glorp bounces everywhere and covers her in recess balls.
  • Motivational Lie: Discussed. When the gang thinks they gave Vince a fake victory, they admit they feel guilty. Because what if the next ball is an automatic out? They're cheering when learning that Gus messed up, meaning Vince kicked a real home run.
