Some readings of psychic energy lead Ash and Goh to explore Cero Island searching for Mew. However, the Pokémon responsible for the readings ends up being one familiar to Ash.

  • The Bus Came Back: Mewtwo from the original movie makes a return. This is also his first full appearance in the main series.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Mewtwo completely dominates Pikachu, Cinderace, and Lucario during their battle, and as it's basically a sparring match, it's implied he was holding back. Though to be fair, the latter two do manage to land a hit on the Legendary, which is more than can be said about literally everyone Mewtwo has ever faced apart from Mew.
  • Inevitable Waterfall: The river that Ash and Goh fall into leads straight to a waterfall.
  • Pet the Dog: Mewtwo, who formally kept his protection solely to his fellow clones, has taken to gathering abused Pokémon and taking them under his protection.
  • Quicksand Sucks: Ash runs into quicksand while escaping from a pack of Mankey. Goh is able to run to solid ground before sinking and then uses his Heracross to save Ash. On the other hand, Water Pokémon can swim through it without getting stuck.
  • Wham Line: Mewtwo's final words for Ash and Goh before he sends them back to the Cerise Institute.
Mewtwo: Your journeys have only just begun.
  • World's Strongest Man: Ash explicitly calls Mewtwo the most powerful Pokémon in the world. Mewtwo showcases this by completely curbstomping Ash and Goh in a sparring match.
