This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Beware the Silly Ones: Despite being a conventionally deranged Team Rocket trick, they have succeeded duping several trainers (now including Serena), and when cornered by the heroes, they overpower Officer Jenny and incapacitate Pikachu and Furfrou. They lose only through persistence and Ash's ability to improvise.
  • Call-Back: Pikachu is blinded by Team Rocket's Inkay in almost the exact same way their Koffing did to him in their second ever face off. By this point however, his and Ash's experience prevails despite it.
  • Continuity Nod: When Officer Jenny shows Serena and Ash a photo of her family, Serena notes with surprise that there are a lot of Officer Jennys while Ash simply responds with "I knew it."
  • Damsel in Distress: Fennekin after Serena falls for Team Rocket's scam, and later Furfrou as they attempt to rescue her. Pikachu narrowly avoids the same trick since he and Ash reject a makeover.
  • Deadly Dodging: Pikachu Thunderbolts Wobbuffet. When the latter uses Mirror Coat to send it back, Pikachu jumps away so Inkay takes the shot instead.
  • Determinator: Despite being nervous and lacking confidence for most of the episode, Jessica never stopped trying to win her Furfrou over. She is also inspired by Ash's heroic and awesome performance and does everything she can to break Furfrou out of its cage during the climax. This is what finally allows Furfrou to trust her completely.
  • Fashion Show: To convince Ash and friends that they are Pokémon fashionistas, a disguised Team Rocket puts on a fashion show that consists entirely of Wobbuffet modeling a bunch of different outfits. It's too hysterical for words!
  • Handicapped Badass: Temporarily. Pikachu is blinded by Inkay's ink during the climax, but Ash and Pikachu are no strangers to battling without relying on their vision. Because they are so close, Ash is able to direct Pikachu perfectly while battling Inkay and Wobbuffet. It's a true testament to how skilled and in sync Ash and Pikachu really are, as well as The Power of Trust between them that allows Pikachu to follow Ash's commands without seeing what's going on.
  • Imagine Spot: Bonnie has two of Fennekin with weird hairstyles while trying to convince Serena to let a disguised Team Rocket groom her Fennekin.
  • Villain Ball: Team Rocket had actually successfully stolen a bag load of Pokemon with their fashionista scam. However they chose to wait until they'd scammed the twerps before hauling them over to the boss, inevitably costing them all.
