Tropes for the episode:
- Affably Evil: Groves in his interactions with Rebadow.
- Broken Pedestal:

- Even Evil Has Standards: Ryan is the only one who doesn't laugh at Schillinger's humiliation of Beecher.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Had Schillinger just agreed to let Beecher transfer to another pod, he never would have had to deal with his Arch-Enemy always trying to cause him trouble.

- Jerkass: McManus is rather rude to Gloria when she offers to take him out for dinner.

- The inmates seem to take delight in Beecher's humiliation including Hill.
- Papa Wolf: Ricardo Alvarez stabbed and killed a fellow inmate for mutilating his son, which unfortunately led to him being confined to solitary for life.
- Pet the Dog:
- Ryan freely supplies Beecher with drugs so that his death won't feel as painful, which ends up saving Beecher's life.
- He also has a special dinner made for Vahue out of gratitude as Vahue won a game that made him a lot of gambling money.
- Finally he stops himself cursing in front of Sister Pete, not wanting to upset her.
- Hunt is implied to be a loving parent as he asks Vahue for his autograph so he can give it to his son.
- Scott acts genuinely friendly to Groves and advises him on how to make money when he wouldn't really gain anything from it.
- Politically Incorrect Villain: Ross has this attitude towards the Muslims.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Said prevents the conflict between Ross and Mershah from escalating into violence.
- The Starscream: Mershah decides to let Said die so that he may take control of the Muslims.
- You Have Out Lived Your Usefulness:
- Schillinger tires of Beecher and decides to dispose of him.
- Ryan realises Nino is manipulating him so he plans with Adebisi to get rid of him so that they can control the drug operations together.
