Recap / Over the Garden Wall: Chapter 8 "Babes in the Woods"

Go To

Wirt is in despair, convinced that they'll never go home. He apathetically lets Greg be the "leader" now, and as they both sleep, we see into Greg's dreams.

Tropes:

  • Creepy Jazz Music: The North Wind's Villain Song is done in an ominous-sounding jazz style.
  • Deal with the Devil: At the end of the episode, Greg makes a deal with the Beast to save Wirt.
  • Mood Whiplash: This is one of the bleaker episodes of the show, but it constantly cuts from the very real threat of the boys possibly dying in the snow to Greg's rather zany and lighthearted dream about him saving a fantasy village in the clouds.
  • Oh, Crap!: Once Wirt wakes up, he notices that Greg disappeared. Then, he hears the Beast singing, and he immediately realizes what just happened.
  • Overly Long Gag: Greg gets welcomed to Cloud City by no fewer than three separate welcoming committees in sequence, each one with their own little song. Gets Lampshaded when Greg asks if there's more.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": Wirt, upon hearing the Beast singing in the distance and realizing where Greg went.
  • Selfless Wish: When the Queen of the Clouds offers Greg a wish, he wants to go home, but can't bring Wirt because he's already in the Beast's power. He wishes to meet the Beast so that he can save Wirt instead.
  • Shout-Out: The whole dream sequence harkens back to a lot of 20s and 30s cartoons with Greg's arrival being an extended reference to the first of the Alice Comedies.
  • Snow Means Death: It starts snowing while the brothers are asleep and when Greg makes a deal with the Beast to save Wirt.
  • Sugar Bowl: Cloud City is populated by cute, cheerful talking animals and angels, and three of the angels even sing a song about how "everything is fine all the time" there.
  • Wham Episode: Greg gives himself up to the Beast in exchange for Wirt's soul.

Trope Namer - Old North Wind

The trope namer, YES HE IS! Greg imagines the cold wind as a villain in his dream (with three cloud minions.)

How well does it match the trope?
