Tropes in this episode:

  • All for Nothing: After a decade of financial investment and research development, the Tower of Babel is destroyed in less than an evening. While obviously not happy, Gargoyle resignedly accepts the outcome as a better alternative than the facility and its secrets falling into Nemo's hands.
  • Batman Gambit: Out of patience for finding the Blue Water, Gargoyle forces Nadia to divulge Jean's name so that he can issue an ultimatum. He gives Jean one hour to surrender himself with the Blue Water.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Hanson and Gratan rescuing Nadia, Jean, and the rest of the Gang from Gargoyle's palace. The Gratan then gets rescued by the timely arrival of the Nautilus.
  • Didn't See That Coming: The Nautilus breaching Cape Verde and getting in undetected. Nobody in the Neo-Atlantean forces saw it coming.
  • Drives Like Crazy: A maniacal Sanson and the Gratan during the escape from Gargoyle's palace. Jean's weirded out by this while Hanson and Grandis aren't even fazed (as, according to them, Sanson's always like this).
  • Enemy Mine: Jean and the Grandis Gang have to reluctantly join forces to save Nadia and escape the island (though with Grandis, the former objective is more about payback and to deprive Gargoyle of his prize).
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Gargoyle claims he doesn't like resorting to such lengths like having Nadia crucified on the castle to lure in Jean. Given his behavior over the last two episodes, though, (and on top of what we subsequently learn over the rest of the series), it's up the viewer to judge if he's being sincere as a case of Pragmatic Villainy, lying, or is just delusional.
  • Failsafe Failure: The Tower of Babel would have eventually blown up even without sabotage, as the artifical Orihalcon that powered it began cracking after the first shot; admittedly, without the sabotage that overheated the plant, they could have squeezed more shots out of it.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • While describing the Gratan to Jean, Hanson mentions the Tank wasn't designed to operate underwater. This will end up being a major plot point of Episode 10.
    • Gargoyle trying to nuke the Nautilus by firing the Tower of Babel right at ground zero. It's a clue that Nemo isn't just an ordinary foe of Neo-Atlantis, but that there's a deep, personal enmity between the two men if Gargoyle's willing to go to those kinds of lengths just to try and kill the Captain. We'll gradually get the full story over the course of the series.
  • I Call It "Vera": A variation with the Gratan. Jean learns the Grandis Gang has something of a running internal debate over the naming of their Tank. As its engineer, Hanson christened it the Grandis Tank, or Gratan. However, as the team leader, Grandis 'encourages' her boys to instead call it the Catherine.
  • Never My Fault: Gargoyle punishes his subordinates for the destruction of Cape Verde and failing to capture Jean and the Grandis Gang, even though the island was only destroyed because he gave the order to fire the Tower (and ignored his scientist's warnings).
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Gargoyle's airship is flying overhead in the final scene and Nemo and company have a chance to shoot him out of the sky...and the Nautilus doesn't open fire. Given that we don't see the submarine utilize missiles on-screen again until Episode 21, it's possible they expended their entire complement against the Tower of Babel and thus couldn't take the shot even if they wanted to.
  • Oh, Crap!: Gargyole when the Nautilus breaches Cape Verde.
  • Properly Paranoid: Gargoyle anticipated Jean would try to trick him during his surrender and prepared his defenses accordingly.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Gargoyle's personal opinion of his subordinates is made quite clear in this episode.
  • Tranquil Fury: Gargoyle after the Tower of Babel blows up.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Again, Hanson and Grandis' unfazed, almost deadpan reactions to Sanson being a maniac behind the wheel of the Gratan.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Hanson is indirectly responsible for the destruction of Cape Verde and the Neo-Atlanteans losing the new Tower of Babel. By sabotaging the island's power plant, he manages to draw all attention onto the escaping Gratan after they rescue Nadia. If the Neo-Atlanteans had not been distracted and if their systems had been online, they would've spotted the Nautilus breaching the island's dockyard. If that had happened, Gargoyle would never have had to fire the Tower (and would've discovered that the artificial Orihalcon had become defective after only one test firing).
  • Worf Had the Flu: Downplayed example with the Gratan. Hanson was making repairs from the battle with the Abraham when they were captured in Episode 05. Repairs were nearly completed, but he still has to do an off-screen rush job to get the Gratan ready in time for their rescue operation. So while it's not explicitly played up, the Gratan isn't quite operating at 100% during their subsequent escape.
  • You're Insane!: Despite their mutual hatred for one another, even Nemo can't believe Gargoyle's actually crazy enough to fire the Tower of Babel right at ground zero (thereby risking his life and the entire weapons project) just to try and get the Nautilus.
