Go To

Lunella enters a robotics contest under the tutelage of the school’s new science teacher. But her mentor’s harsh methods push poor Lunella to her breaking point.

  • Adaptational Job Change: Jackson Wheele, a corrupt businessman turned supervillain in the comics, is here reimagined as a robot fighter turned supervillain.
  • An Aesop: It never hurts to push yourself to greater heights so long as it doesn't endanger your mental state. However, it's important to understand that one's expectations and methods to meet them do not always match your own, and there is no need to struggle after them if you believe in your own abilities.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Dr. Ojo asks Lunella if she is a "diamond", one that has the potential of being perfect, or a "coal", one who just settles on what they are now despite the flaws. Lu runs herself ragged all episode to prove she is a diamond, but it takes a panic attack and encouragement from her friends and family that she is already one.
  • As You Know: When Lunella learns that Dr. Ojo is from Wakanda, she says "Wakanda, as in the most advanced country in the world?" and procedes to name its most notable achievements.
  • Big "NO!": The episode ends with Hrbek letting out this upon learning that he's going back to teaching both gym class and science class.
  • The Chain of Harm: Dr. Ojo was given a Training from Hell similar to the one she put Lunella through. She admits in hindsight that she hated it too and probably should've tried a different approach.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The song Lunella and Casey skate and sing to is used to get the former out of her panic attack.
  • Dark Horse Victory: Jackson Wheele and Lunella's superior robots lose to Theodore Zimmer's robot completely by chance.
  • Death Glare: Mimi and Casey both shoot Dr. Ojo impressive ones after Lunella's breakdown.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: Subverted. Lunella breaking down means that Moon Girl is not around to save the day as usual. It does make Devil's fight against the episode's villain a bit difficult but the other science kids providing backup is more than enough to stop him, to the point where Moon Girl was not needed after all.
  • Evil Is Petty: Jackson Wheel loses to Theodore Zimmer in the robot competition through sheer dumb luck. He's not happy about the loss and crashes the event a season later with a lethal version of his Big Wheel robot.
  • Fantastic Recruitment Drive: Dr. Ojo's real motive for teaching at a high school was to recruit Lunella as a Wakandan scientist/spy. Needless to say, Lunella does not accept after the way she's been treated, on top of wanting to continue work with the fellow students at her school, though she does offer Dr. Ojo a possible raincheck on the recruitment with the two at least parting ways amicably.
  • Heroic BSoD: Lunella encounters one after weeks of abusive training from her mentor, when her robot fails due to a single imperfection. Because of this, she breaks down, leading to Mimi and Casey to break her out of her panic attack. With Moon Girl absent, Devil and the other science students are left to fight off the Villain of the Week for her. By the time Lu is back, the villain is already defeated.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Not only was one of the announcers of the robot competition voiced by Gary Anthony Williams, but he also has a very strong resemblance to Gary Anthony Williams himself.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Lunella assumes that the new science teacher isn't all that is cracked up to be... until Dr. Ojo shows off projection tech from her earrings; and that is before she learns that the teacher hails from Wakanda, well known for its vibranium-based technology.
  • Jerkass Realization: After witnessing what her methods had done to Lunella along with Lunella standing up to her, Dr. Ojo realizes the way that she mentored her did way more harm than good and that there were other ways she could have brought out Lunella's potential.
  • Ninja Prop: As they chase a Robin Hood-themed thief, Moon Girl is gushing to Devil about Dr. Ojo's four PhDs , and four diploma symbols appear around her head. Moon Girl then grabs one of the floating diplomas and throws it at the thief to trip him up.
  • Rogues' Gallery Transplant: The Big Wheel is traditionally a Spider-Man villain.
  • Tough Love: Deconstructed. Dr. Ojo tries this approach while mentoring Lunella. While it makes her robot better, it causes her to have a panic attack due to failure. Meanwhile, Coach Hrbek's more positive and nurturing approach allows the other competitors to band together and defeat the episode's villain.
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: Theodore Zimmer is a Robot Warz participant who owns a dog robot that supposedly doesn't do much except shake its head. It is only by sheer good luck that his opponents's robots, Jackson Wheele and later Lunella, are destroyed through sheer bad luck, resulting in him remaining champion.
