Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S2E26 Zedd Waves

Go To

Rocky, Aisha, and Adam compete in a triathlon. Lord Zedd sends down the Beamcaster monster, who places the citizens of Angel Grove under a spell to worship his evil alien master. It'll take some alteration of signals, and some help by those three new guys, to cancel Beamcaster's transmission for good.

Tropes

  • Accidental Misnaming: Beamcaster's spell causes his victims to keep chanting, "Hail Lord Zedd!" Skull is a comical exception.
Skull: Hail Lord Fred! Hail Lord Fred!
  • Affably Evil: Beamcaster sounds like a pretty pleasant fellow when he isn't brainwashing you to become a zombie.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Beamcaster looks ridiculous and talks like some evil Howard Cosell, but he likely came closer to achieving true victory for Zedd than any monster before him, hypnotizing the entire team!
  • Big "YES!": Tommy after the Power Blaster blows up Beamcaster.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: The Rangers, Bulk and Skull and almost everyone in Angel Grove become this when hit by Beamcaster's Zedd Waves.
  • Foreshadowing: Rocky, Aisha, and Adam tell the other Rangers that helping them was more important to them.
  • Hidden Depths: Aisha worked a few summers at a radio station, which allows her to make some repairs on Billy's device.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Tommy catches a bomb from Beamcaster and sends it right back at him. Twice.
  • Hope Spot: Billy designs a device to disrupt Beamcaster's control, but it gets trampled when he and Kimberly get overwhelmed by the hypnotized people, causing them to fall under the spell as well.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: After affecting Tommy, Beamcaster says "Now it's time for me to take a commercial break." and disappears before fading out to a commercial.
  • Mad Bomber: Beamcaster uses explosives for weapons.
  • Near-Villain Victory: The entire team gets hypnotized by Beamcaster, along with countless civilians. If not for Rocky, Aisha, and Adam showing up belatedly, Zedd would've won.
  • Never Trust a Trailer: The opening teaser shows Pink and Blue Ranger surrounded by the hypnotized people, including Red, Yellow and Black Ranger. The brief clip suggests all five Rangers being surrounded and hypnotized all at once.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: With the triathlon still going on during the Beamcaster's rampage, Rocky, Aisha, and Adam end up finishing in last place as a result of them having to save the Rangers from the monster's hypnosis.
  • No-Sell: After being freed from the spell, Billy tries to use the repaired device on Beamcaster, but the monster effortlessly deflects the blast.
  • Pungeon Master: Beamcaster is quick with such quips, such as when tossing explosives at Tommy.
Beamcaster: The explosive hits just keep on comin'!
  • Spanner in the Works: The only thing that caused Zedd's plan to fail was Rocky, Aisha, and Adam pulling a Big Damn Heroes.
  • Stock Footage: With the actors playing Jason, Zack, and Trini having already left the show, the only shot of them in their civilian forms is a recycled scene from "Something Fishy".
