Former Navy SEAL and former POW Thomas Magnum now lives in Hawaii, working as a private investigator. When his friend and former comrade Sebastian Nuzo is kidnapped and murdered, Magnum ignores police orders and investigates. Joining him are Orville 'Rick' Wright, Theodore 'TC' Calvin and MI6 agent turned major domo Juliette Higgins.

- Artistic Licence – Military: Magnum was a POW, but the shot of him in his dress whites at the end of the opening credits does not show him wearing a POW ribbon. A Navy SEAL also would not wear dress whites with stubble.
- Crossover: Kimee Balmilero appears as Hawaii Five-0's Dr. Noelani Cunha.
- Dark and Troubled Past: As well as his time as a POW, Magnum has some romantic trouble in his past that will be explored later.Lara: [To Higgins] Did you know he almost got married once?
- Death by Adaptation: Sebastian Nuzo did not die in the original series
- Fake-Out Opening: The opening has Magnum parachute from orbit for a mission. Turns out it's in Robin's book, for which Magnum was the inspiration.
- Fire-Forged Friends: Magnum, Nuzo, T.C. and Rick are former Navy SEALs who were POWs together. They now live close together in Hawaii and are a Family of Choice.
- Hollywood Healing: Despite a deep chest wound having been treated with cauterisation in a Flashback, during a Shirtless Scene no scars are visible on Magnum's chest.
- I Owe You My Life: Nuzo's murder is especially hard for Magnum as he credits him with saving his life when they were POWs. Then Magnum couldn't save Nuzo.
- The Precious, Precious Car: To Higgins' annoyance, Magnum drives a vintage Ferrari owned by Robin. It gets totalled during a Car Chase, so he drives another one instead.Higgins: You can't do this.
Magnum: I need a car.
Higgins: Call an Uber.
Magnum: Wh-What am I, nineteen?
Higgins: You cannot take another car.
Magnum: Call Robin see what he says. - Shout-Out: The title echoes that of the original series episode "Did You See The Sun Rise?" which also deals with Magnum and co.'s time as POWs.
- The Thing That Would Not Leave: How Higgins sees Magnum; a freeloader living rent-free on her employer's estate and driving his cars while allegedly working but not actually bringing in money. As he has Robin's permission to be there, she has to put up with him, but doesn't have to like it and isn't shy about saying so.
- Uncle Pennybags: Robin Masters, who lets Magnum live rent-free on his estate in exchange for light security work. Possibly justified as Magnum is the inspiration for Robin's bestselling book series, which may have paid for the estate.
- Worst Aid: A Flashback to their time as POWs shows Nuzo saving Magnum's life by cauterising his wound with gunpowder. Justified as they're in a POW camp with no medical care, and Magnum would die if he does nothing.Nuzo: Look, I got an idea. But it’s gonna hurt.
Magnum: It already hurts.
Nuzo: That’s the spirit.
Magnum: [Voiceover] Cauterizing a wound with gunpowder is way worse than you think... but it saved my life.
