A group of high school graduates decide to spend their last weekend together at a local lake. When a prank goes awry, the group becomes stranded in the middle of the lake, with a hungry cephalopod lurking below.
This episode contains examples of:
- Bastard Boyfriend: Tyler is insensitive to his girlfriend's wants and writes off her nagging him as "that time of the month". When she finally chews him out for his immature attitude and unwillingness to take things seriously, plus his nasty prank on Ruthie, he snaps and leaves her stranded with the others on the raft by taking the canoe back to shore. He gets attacked and devoured by the octopus not long after.
- Blatant Lies: Tracy saying "No regrets..." after venting to Sean that she wished Tyler had applied for college along with her.
- Break the Cutie: Both the girls experience this after their boyfriends Tyler and Bruce are killed. Ruthie was seemingly traumatized by Tyler's dragging her underwater moments before the octopus even did anything.
- Can't Take Criticism: Tyler's response to the others calling him out for his mean pranks and making Ruthie cry is to take the canoe back towards the shoreline and strand his "friends" out on the lake.
- Death by Irony: The Oklahoma Octopus kills Tyler by snatching him out of the stolen canoe and drowning him, not long after the prick pretended to drown for kicks and later did the same to Ruthie. What prevents it from being a Karmic Death is that by his depriving the canoe of his friends moments before, Tyler signed both Bruce and Ruthie's death warrants.
- Dude, Not Funny!: NOBODY in the group was amused by Tyler faking his drowning and then pretending to be a lake monster and dragging Ruthie under. The poor girl was in tears after the fact and had to be comforted by Bruce and Tracy. Tyler does not appreciate the criticism and spitefully strands them on the raft by stealing their boat.
- Final Girl: Tracy makes it out alive alongside Sean, though they both get groped by the beast's tentacles while swimming to shore.
- A Friend in Need: Bruce goes to Tyler's rescue despite the latter traumatizing Ruthie (Bruce's girlfriend) with his mean prank and then shoving him off the raft in a textbook temper tantrum. Poor guy gets dragged down and eaten for his trouble.
- I Regret Nothing: Sean says so to Tracy about his choices upon graduating high school. Then one of his friends strands him and the others in the middle of Lake Thunderbird after a falling out. He loses that "friend" and two others as a result of his neglecting to tell them about sighting the octopus.
- Jerkass: Tyler decides to take the canoe and strand his friends on the raft when they snap at him for pulling one too many pranks on them. Tracy rightly calls him an asshole.note
- Kill the Cutie: Ruthie gets pulled off the raft and eaten when the octopus attacks the platform in earnest, much to the surviving Tracy's horror and grief.
- Lazy Bum: Tyler didn't even try to apply for college, according to Tracy, much to her annoyance.
- Never My Fault: Tyler refuses to apologize for his mean prank on Ruthie and proceeds to tear into Tracy for "being a bitch" for weeks on end, just for calling him out on his immaturity.
- Nice Guy: Sean is by far the saintliest of the group, doing what he can to deescalate the others' anger at Tyler and briefly reassuring them that Tyler would come back when the latter strands them on the raft...only for the octopus to begin picking them off.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Tyler stranding his friends for them rightfully being angry at his immaturity deprives them of the safest way to get back to shore. This screws them over when the octopus decides to feed...meaning Tyler basically helped the beast kill Bruce and Ruthie as well as himself.
- No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Bruce died minutes after Tyler when he went to help the jerk after his disappearance from the canoe. And this was after Tyler had shoved Bruce off the raft in a temper tantrum for his being called out for upsetting Ruthie with his prank.
- Noodle Incident: It is never specified exactly how Sean ended up with the cast on his left arm.
- Poor Communication Kills: Sean glimpsed the octopus early on but dismissed it as nothing and didn't tell his friends, let alone check the tape to confirm what it was (he seemingly never got around to examining it beforehand). He only admits the truth later after Bruce and Tyler are killed, much to the girls' outrage.
- Stepford Smiler: Tracy is clearly on a knife's edge when having to deal with Tyler and his wild out-of-control lifestyle though she keeps it under wraps for the most part until Tyler's pranks go too far.
- Token Minority Couple: A black guy (Bruce) and an Asian girl (Ruthie). By contrast to Tyler and Tracy, they are quite happy together, making what happens to them all the more tragic.
