Recap / Little Princess S 2 E 22 I Want To Collect

Go To

The Princess is outside on her tricycle, with the pets chasing it. The narrator asks where she is going in such a hurry, and she explains that she saw the postman with a parcel. The entire castle-hold is very excited, until it turns out to be a stamp, which the King collects, but everyone else just finds boring. The Princess asks the other adults if they also collect things, and they do: the Chef collects little teaspoons, the Prime Minister bottle tops, the General toy soldiers, the Queen knitting patterns, and the Maid jokingly claims she collects dust. The Princess decides that she needs to collect as well, if everyone else does it.

Outside, the narrator asks the Princess what she wants to collect, but she cryptically replies, "special things". She picks some flowers and sticky-tapes them to her bedroom wall, but when she shows everybody, they've wilted. While throwing the dead flowers away, she notices a button in the garbage and decides to collect those, but she steals them and has to give them back.

The Princess goes outside and sulks, deciding to give up trying to collect, but then she throws a rock and decides to collect rocks. However, two of them turn out to be snails, and two beetles, leaving only one stone. This makes the Princess scream. The King consoles her and tells her that he collects stamps because they have his favourite things on them. This inspires the Princess to collect photos of everybody, and it works.

At the end of the episode, the pets and an owl have made a den under the table, full of twigs and fish.

This episode provides examples of

  • Aesop Amnesia: Just like in "I Want My Puppets", the Princess steals despite learning not to in "I Want a Shop".
  • Artistic License – Biology: The flowers take longer to wilt than real-life flowers would, and they're stated to die because they "need water" even though the real reason flowers die when picked is because they have no roots.
  • Big "WHAT?!": The Princess goes, "What?!" when she notices her flowers have drooped.
  • Blatant Lies: The Chef tries to be polite and claim he finds the King's stamps interesting, despite looking very bored.
  • Blinded by the Light: The Prime Minister shouts, "I can't see!" when the Princess photographs him.
  • Buffy Speak: The Prime Minister tries to compliment the King's stamps by calling them "stampy".
  • Burp of Finality: The beetle burps after eating the other.
  • Cock-a-Doodle Dawn: A rooster is seen in a tree, crowing, in the morning.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: The General's pants fall down, exposing his boxers, after the Princess steals the buttons off them.
  • Damned by Faint Praise: When the Princess offends the King by claiming she will collect something "exciting" instead of stamps, the others try to cheer him up by complimenting the stamp collection. The "compliments" they come up with are "they're very sticky" (General) and "stampy" (Prime Minister).
  • Diurnal Nocturnal Animal: The owl is seen awake.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: One of the beetles eats another of the same apparent species.
  • Only One Finds It Fun: The King is the only one keen on the idea of collecting stamps.
  • Plot Time: In real life, it'd take longer than a few minutes for a picked flower to wilt.
  • Speak in Unison: The adults say, "Princess!" in unison when they discover she's stolen their buttons.
  • Tempting Fate: The Gardener says to his flowers, "Don't go away", and then the Princess picks them.
Gardener: "What?! I said, 'Don't go away'!"
