"Yeah, you definitely made a huge mistake. But the crazy thing... I mean it worked. After all those miscarriages and the doctor telling you you can't have kids and then this stuck. Petra, it's kind of a miracle, right?"
Rafael to Petra

Michael interrogates Heidi von Ocher. Jane has to last-minute plan Lina's birthday, having forgotten about it because of Mateo. Rogelio struggles to work with Luciana.

Tropes

  • Age-Inappropriate Art: Jane and Lina performing "Hot In Herre" at their Catholic school talent show gets a shocked reaction from the Stern Nuns and Alba in the audience.
  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Feeling freed from thinking about Mateo all the time by Lina's birthday party, Jane is now ready to start writing her paper on The Great Gatsby. But she's also ridiculously drunk, so she ends up writing total nonsense.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Jane and Michael have one in this episode.
Jane: It was the best kiss of my life, Ma.
  • Church of Happyology: A notable aversion- Rogelio actually says he dabbled in Scientology.
  • Flashback: The episode opens with Lina and Jane competing in a school talent competition.
  • I Have Your Wife: A rare example where the kidnappers are the sympathetic characters. Rogelio and Xo kidnap Luciana's bunnies in order to get her to give up his Scientology tapes.
  • Is This Thing Still On?: Michael confesses he let Nadine go to Jane and this trope is name-dropped when they worry that Rafael heard over the baby monitor.
  • Platonic Declaration of Love: Jane and Lina when they make up at Lina's birthday party.
  • Reality Has No Subtitles: All the German in this episode is unsubtitled. At one point the narrator tries to use Google Translate to make sense of it, but the result is mostly nonsense.
  • Snow Means Love: Jane activates the artificial snow machine when she and Michael kiss.
  • Translation: "Yes": Michael asks Heidi von Ocher if she recognizes "Denise" and gets a long angry rant, which Heidi's milkmaid claims translates to "no."
  • Working with the Ex: Rogelio and Luciana. It isn't going well.
  • Zip Me Up: Michael zips Jane's dress up.
