Recap / J-WITCH S2 E17, "Illusions of Flame"

Go To

The Guardians' well-deserved vacation in Hawaii is spoiled as Nerissa enacts a plan to divide them, while the awakening of the Fire Demon Chi further complicates things.

  • Adaptation Expansion: The presence of the Fire Demon Chi is a twofer — in JCA canon, it was the only one of the eight Demon Chi not seen, and its use here adds a subplot to the W.I.T.C.H. episode "I is for Illusion" that was obviously not present in canon.
  • Age Lift: In-universe, Miranda ages up her human form from adolescence to her late teens/early twenties.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: While Nerissa fails in her plan to steal the Heart of Kandrakar, she still manages to incapacitate Uncle by putting him in a magically-induced coma, and Drago manages to escape with the Fire Demon Chi after it's removed from Taranee.
  • Beam-O-War: Nerissa and Uncle have one between her Quintessence and his chi magic.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Uncle put a protection spell on the Chi-o-Matic that prevents Drago from touching it, just in case.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Will's, and to a lesser extent Jade's, grief over Jewel's death continues to be a plot thread.
    • The Knights of Vengeance all grumble about the Demon Chi powers they'd previously managed to briefly hold.
  • Contrived Coincidence: The Fire Demon Chi just happens to activate in Hawaii while the Guardians are on vacation there.
  • The Corruption: As Uncle previously warned, mixing Demon Chi and Guardian power of even the same element is highly dangerous. When Taranee is infected by Shendu's chi, she goes berserk as it overwhelms her, and it starts spreading to the other Guardians' Aurameres, starting to turn them into demons too, and threatens to completely destabilize and destroy the Heart.
  • Divide and Conquer: Nerissa tries to turn the Guardians on each other by playing to their regular disagreements and insecurities.
  • Foil: The author's notes briefly explore how Jade and Nerissa are this to each other, with the former being Chaotic Good who relies on Indy Ploys and doesn’t care much about rules or authority, and the latter being a Lawful Evil Control Freak and Chessmaster.
  • He Knows Too Much: After Nerissa reveals herself to Uncle, she puts him in a magical coma to prevent him from telling anyone else.
  • Internal Reveal: Nerissa singles Uncle out during the chapter's climatic fight in order to expose her identity to him.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Nerissa admits to having once seen Uncle as like a brother.
  • Lured into a Trap: After the Guardians figure out Nerissa's plot, they pretend to have completely turned on each other in order to trick her into making her move so they can ambush her.
  • No MacGuffin, No Winner: Nerissa is perfectly willing to destroy the Heart with the Fire Demon Chi after her plot to steal it fails, stating that if she can't have it, no one can.
  • Ship Tease: Drago praises Miranda's skills, and compliments the older human form she takes.
  • Spotting the Thread: Jade notes that Nerissa's shadow stays the same no matter what form she glamors herself as, exposing her attempts to trick the Guardians into turning on each other.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: The reaction of heroes and villains alike to the Contrived Coincidence above.
