Recap / Inanimate Insanity S 2 E 5 A Kick In The Right Direction

Go To

Episode contains the following tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: When Apple opens Box to see what's inside him, she gasps that it's Taco, much to the other contestants' shock. Then Knife takes a look and reveals that there's just the word "Box" written inside, which Apple misread.
  • Character Development: Starting with this episode, thanks to being blackmailed by Trophy, Knife starts making an effort to be nicer by conveying his nastier thoughts into sarcasm...but it doesn't really work out as intended.
  • Delayed Reaction: After Knife finally masters sarcasm, he thanks Nickel for teaching it to him and sarcastically tells him that he appreciates it.
    Nickel: No proble— Hey!
  • Favouritism Flip-Flop: When Marshmallow and Apple are discussing Bow, Apple calls her "a disgusting and annoying menace." Marshmallow then says that she actually thought that Bow was kind of nice, and Apple, wanting to preserve her new-found friendship with Marshmallow, changes tack and says that Bow was awesome before chuckling nervously.
  • Gretzky Has the Ball: While attempting to motivate her team for the soccer challenge, Lightbulb mixes together terms from seven different games and sports, only one of which is the one they're playing.
Lightbulb: Alrighty, sports fans, we're going to have to dribble around those bases to get the touchdowns we need to checkmate the other team! [...] If we're gonna hit that bullseye, we're gonna knock those pins down as a team, but you can't be drownin'!
  • I Resemble That Remark!: When Paintbrush tells Lightbulb that they think "someone" should go to the Calm Down Corner, Lightbulb agrees, and then tells Paintbrush to get going. Paintbrush angrily gets in her face and yells at her that they didn't mean themself, and that they're perfectly calm.
  • Ironic Echo: After Baseball scores the first goal in the soccer challenge by kicking a ball straight through Fan, he tauntingly tells him "Legs!", calling back to how the characters taunted him and the other armless contestants during the dodgeball challenge in "Breaking the Ice" by catching the ball and shouting "Arms!"
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: When Apple prepares to open Box to see what's inside him, Lightbulb gets into her face and urgently warns her to "Be. Careful."
  • Record Needle Scratch: Paintbrush tells Lightbulb that they think "someone" should go to the Calm Down Corner. Lightbulb, misunderstanding, agrees and proceeds to send Paintbrush to the Calm Down Corner, with this sound effect emphasising Paintbrush's shock as they angrily protest.
  • Replacement Scrappy: In-Universe example. Dough was brought into the show as a substitute for Bow, but just about none of the contestants (except Suitcase) like him due to his annoying and bland personality.
  • Rousing Speech: When the Bright Lights fall badly behind in the soccer game and are given a penalty shot each as a chance to make up for it, Lightbulb makes a short but sweet one about how they can do anything if they put their minds to it and tells them to win "the bright way". An invisible audience cheers as her teammates all make their shots at once... all of which are caught by Baseball, meaning that the team loses the challenge.
  • Staggered Zoom: When Apple sees Marshmallow's picture of Bow and a chair at the beginning of the episode, the camera zooms in on her face like this as she gasps in horror.
  • The Stinger: During the challenge, Lightbulb sends Paintbrush to the Calm-Down Corner. After the credits, the scene cuts to the Corner at night, revealing that Paintbrush is still there. They sigh in irritation, and the episode ends.
  • Visible Odor: The moldy leftovers of Soap's pizza from the previous episode that the non-eliminated contestants are given as a prize have green, wiggly stink lines coming off it.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: When Soap is given the rotten leftovers of the disgusting pizza she made in the previous episode, she eats it in an attempt to prove that it's not that bad, only to immediately vomit.
