Tropes

  • Abusive Parents: As per comics canon, Stephanie's parents are revealed to be emotionally abusive, her mother blaming her for all the problems in her own life and her father forcing her to go along with covering up her mother's drug addiction.
  • Character Death: Cressida is killed by the Court leader.
  • Defector from Decadence: The Owl leader refers to Bruce's ancestor as "the traitor Alan Wayne", indicating that Alan used to be a member or associate of the Court.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: Turner and Duela enter the Court's secret meeting by wearing masks that were 3D-printed by Cullen, based on one of the old Court group pictures they found last episode.
  • Foreshadowing: The leader of the Court of Owls is seen walking with a cane shortly after Lincoln March's was shown.
  • Jealous Parent: Crystal Brown bitterly says that Stephanie, not she, is her husband Arthur's real love.
  • Mythology Gag: Arthur tells some audience members "no spoilers" just before Stephanie shows up. "Spoiler" was, of course, Stephanie's superhero codename in the comics prior to her tenure as Robin and Batgirl, and referred to her intentional spoiling of her villainous father Cluemaster's plots.
  • Off with His Head!: Turner stops the Talon from killing Cressida by chopping his head off with one of his own swords.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Duela is the one urging the Knights to go rescue Turner, it's clear she has some feelings for him.
  • The Reveal:
    • Duela reveals that her mother wasn't some random Joker fangirl in Arkham as the audience might have assumed but the supervillain known as Jane Doe.
    • Lincoln March is the leader of the Court of Owls.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: To infiltrate the Court's gala, Duela puts on a fancy dress and does up her hair, which is more effort towards her looks than she usually gives. Turner is noticeably stunned when he sees her.
  • Title Drop: Cullen says the episode's title by asking if the team is really going "into the belly of the beast".
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: A young girl in a Court of Owls mask is the first one to call for Cressida's death.
  • Uncertain Doom: Given that the Talon has previously survived having tons of rock drop onto him, we'll have to see whether or not getting his head lopped off will actually keep him down.
  • Undercover as Lovers: Turner holds Duela hand "to sell the illusion" when they infiltrate the Court's gathering. Later, Duela calls Turner her husband when faking him being unwell.
  • Wham Shot: The scene changes back to the forest where the Court leader takes off his mask to reveal himself as Lincoln March.
  • Zip Me Up: Duela asks Turner to do this for her in her gala dress.
