Recap / Friends S 7 E 12 The One Where Theyre Up All Night

Go To

After attempting to stargaze on the roof of their building, the gang ends up being up all night. Joey and Ross are stuck on the roof, Rachel and Tag try to find contracts that were supposed to be mailed, Monica and Chandler have a long discussion, and Phoebe contends with a broken fire alarm.

  • The Art of Bra Removal: Apparently Tag is very good at this as Rachel doesn't notice he's unhooked hers until she stands up and walks across the room.
  • Brick Joke: With the fire escape's ladder stuck, Joey and Ross opt to flip a quarter to decide who jumps. Naturally, the tossed coin just hits the fire escape and falls into the alley below. Later, after falling off the fire escape himself, an injured Ross says he found a quarter.
  • The Cat Came Back: A Played With inanimate object version. After getting fed up with fire alarm, Phoebe dumps it down the garbage chute. When she hears the alarm again, she's shocked that it actually came back. It's revealed that it was found by a firefighter who had seen her name in the blanket she wrapped the alarm in.
  • Celebrity Paradox: Chandler asks Monica what the difference is between Deep Impact and Armageddon (1998). Bruce Willis, the star of Armageddon, appeared as Paul, the father of Ross' girlfriend Elizabeth.
  • Delayed "Oh, Crap!": How Ross and Joey's plot gets rolling.
Ross: Joey, where's the pipe that was holding the door open?
Joey: [holding said pipe] I don't know. [looks through it for a beat] Yeah, I do.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When Ross has to climb down Joey's body as he's hanging off the fire escape, they choose to do it "face-to-face" rather than "butt-to-face". Halfway through they realise they didn't fully think it through when it becomes "crotch-to-face".
  • Idiot Ball: Ross should have known that stargazing in the middle of Manhattan is simply impossible.
  • It Won't Turn Off: The smoke alarm in Phoebe's apartment keeps beeping even after she pulls the batteries out. She eventually resorts to smashing it to pieces...which just makes it change to a single, continuous, high-pitched shriek.
  • Locked in a Room: Ross and Joey lock themselves on the roof.
  • Oh, Crap!: Ross when he realizes that Joey has taken out the pipe they used to wedge the door open.
  • Ow, My Body Part!: Ross after jumping off a fire escape.
Ross: Ow! My ankle! I really hurt my ankle! I think I twisted it wh... Ooohhh, a quarter!
  • Terrible Ticking: Phoebe is kept up by her fire alarm beeping. She smashes it and it still beeps. She puts on earmuffs and a hat to drown out the noise and also tries throwing it out.
