Recap / Frasier S 01 E 23 Frasier Cranes Day Off

Go To

Frasier gets the flu and is forced to stay home, but his illness-induced paranoia causes some problems.

Tropes:

  • All Just a Dream: Subverted - At the end of the episode, Frasier wakes up at home, thinking that the mess he made at KACL was a nightmare, and falls asleep after Daphne confirms it for him. Once he's out, though, Martin asks her why she lied to him, and she explains that it'll be more fun to tell him the truth once he's healthy.
  • All Part of the Show: After security takes Frasier away, Niles covers for his drug-fueled antics by claiming that it was a skit about drug abuse.
  • Annoying Patient: Frasier. He could even rival Sheldon.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Frasier has two, when he first dreams that Niles and Gil conspired to kill Fras to take his timeslot, and again when he comes down from his (unintentional) high. Then Roz has one in The Tag.
  • Contemplating Your Hands: Frasier does it on three different occasions; first, with Roz, who's checking to see how stoned Frasier is, and Niles when he starts wagging his finger in Frasier's face, then finally Frasier himself does it while taking a call.
  • Feigning Healthiness: Frasier gets paranoid that Gil is making a move for his time slot, so he initially tries to go to work even though looks and feels awful. He is barely able to make it out the door before common sense prevails. Later, after he starts believing that Niles is trying to steal his show, he decides to self-medicate with "some wonder drugs", which ends with him going to KACL while high as a kite.
  • Food as Bribe: Gil brings chicken soup for Frasier and ladyfingers for Roz, which Frasier sees as an attempt at bribing them into letting him take over their time slot. Roz thinks he's being paranoid, and says that he'd be bribing the station managers if that was the case - just in time for Gil to come back, because he accidentally gave Frasier the Lobster Newburg meant for the station manager's cat.
  • Irony: Frasier notes Martin had a saying, that "if you can walk you can work," which became ironic after he was shot in the hip.
  • Reverse Psychology: Used by Frasier when he talks Niles into filling in for him - which Niles calls him out for doing, and then falls for it anyway.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The title is a reference to the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
    • Roz, when calling security on Frasier, refers to him as Captain Kirk after he locks her and Niles out of the radio booth.
    • One of the drugs that Frasier has Daphne get, Syducane, is named after one of the show's writers, Sy Dukane.
  • Sick Episode: Frasier catches the flu, Hilarity Ensues.
  • Stoners Are Funny: Frasier is tripping some serious balls when he tries to take back his show.
Niles: Bravo, Frasier, for so brilliantly demonstrating why they call it "dope"!
  • The Tag: Roz has a nightmare of Frasier doing his show, with Eddie doing her job.
  • Tuckerization: The fictional wonder drug "Syducane" is named after writer Sy Dukane.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: As Daphne lampshades, Frasier has seldom shown her any sort of respect since she's been taking care of him.
