Season 8, Episode 5

Morgan and Mo race to save Grace’s life.

  • All for Nothing: June's treatment appears to be failing, meaning that even when Mo gets Grace to the train car after an entire episode of chases and hostilities, Grace's life cannot be saved.
  • And Then John Was a Zombie: Mo is unable to put down her mother despite her promise to do so, and Grace is given enough time to reanimate and attack her.
  • Character Death: Grace dies of her walker bite.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Morgan trying to escape the train car as walkers surround it.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Grace uses her last breaths to tell Mo how saving her life as a baby was what saved her and Morgan from committing suicide in the face of the nukes in the Season 6 finale "The Beginning."
    • The end of the episode sees Morgan revive his old catchphrase - "I don’t die."
  • Determinator: Mo refuses to give up on trying to save Grace, even going so far as to perform the radiotherapy herself. Unfortunately, by the time they get to the train car its far too late.
  • Downer Ending: And how! Grace is dead, Finch's infection is back, and Mo willingly goes with Shrike.
  • Evil Is Petty: Shrike can't stop herself from smugly gloating about how Morgan killed so many walkers, but failed to kill the one that ultimately bit Grace by surprise.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Grace accepts that it’s too late to save her, and just wants to spend what little time she has left with her family.
  • Failed a Spot Check: If Morgan had simply made sure he knocked out the last two prefects and actually killed Shrike, he wouldn’t have been trapped in the train car.
  • History Repeats: Once again, Morgan's child is attacked by his reanimated love interest, but luckily he's able to put Grace down in time.
  • Hypocrite: Shrike claims to only want the best for PADRE’s children but uses prefects as her armed forces, putting their lives at risk since for all she knows, the group could start using lethal force against them.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: Mo is ultimately unable to put down Grace after she dies, and has to be saved by Morgan, who does it himself.
  • Sanity Slippage: The prospect of Grace's death becoming more and more likely throughout the episode, compounded by when she finally does die, leads Morgan to slowly come more and more unraveled. He keeps it together long enough to put down Grace, however, but when Mo decides to rejoin PADRE, he starts losing it even more.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Grace alludes to this, stating that she and Morgan were never meant to be. Given how much of the series they’ve spent forced apart and unable to have a normal relationship, it’s possible she’s right.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Shrike weaponizes the inverse of this trope, sending prefects after the group since she knows they won’t kill the brainwashed teenagers working for PADRE. She ironically fulfills the trope since she risks the prefects’ lives in the event that the group does decide to use lethal force.
  • You Will Not Survive: June hears of Grace's cancer and admits that even if her treatment saves Grace from the bite, it will only give her some extra time with her loved ones. When her treatment on Finch begins failing and she hears that Grace is not recovering, she admits to Mo there's nothing else she can do for her.
